Director and actor Ben Affleck confirmed that he incorporated artificial intelligence tools into the production of his upcoming thriller Animals. Speaking at the Bloomberg Screentime conference and during the Los Angeles premiere of the film, Affleck explained that the technology served primarily as an efficiency tool during post-production. The project does not rely on heavy visual effects or sci-fi environments, making the tools an experiment in streamlining standard cinematic workflows. Affleck noted that he avoided disclosing specific scenes or technical applications to protect the audience's immersion in the narrative.

“I'm a little bit hesitant to point out what they are or even talk about it because, in my business, we're trying to foster the illusion of reality, right? It's sort of like if you went to a magic show and the magician walked out and said, 'Just before I start, I want you to know there's another bunny under here. This guy's a plant.' It sort of ruins it, right?”

Proprietary models and the InterPositive sale

The technical integration follows Affleck's sale of his artificial intelligence company, InterPositive, to Netflix in March 2026 for $587 million, with some European reports listing the transaction at $600 million. Affleck founded the firm in 2022 and served as its chief executive before transitioning to a senior advisor position following the acquisition. Unlike commercial generative platforms that scrape external media, the InterPositive system was built around closed, filmmaker-specific datasets. Affleck stated that the model learns directly from an active director during production, allowing creators to retain intellectual property rights without mining the copyrighted work of industry peers. He emphasized that the tools are designed for guild signatories to assist editing rather than to generate artificial performers.

Animals is scheduled to debut on October 9, 2026, streaming globally on Netflix alongside a release in select movie theaters. Affleck directed the project and co-wrote the screenplay alongside Billy Ray and Connor O. McIntyre. The narrative centres on Mark Kimball, a Brentwood businessman running for mayor of Los Angeles whose son is kidnapped, triggering a race to gather ransom money. Kerry Washington co-stars as Kimball's wife Abigail, while the ensemble cast also features Luis Gerardo Méndez as an undocumented immigrant who becomes entangled in the crisis, alongside Gillian Anderson and Steven Yeun.

The political backdrop of the film prompted discussions about Affleck's own history of political engagement, which includes past campaign endorsements for Barack Obama, Hillary Clinton, Joe Biden, and Kamala Harris. Co-stars Washington and Méndez commented at the premiere that Affleck possessed the leadership qualities to seek elected office in real life. Affleck dismissed any prospect of entering electoral politics, pointing to what he described as deep dysfunction and financial burdens in the current political landscape. He argued that modern campaigns focus on fundraising and personal attacks rather than policy solutions and genuine leadership.

I think that there is a whatever side of the aisle you're on, one of the interesting things that people can agree on is a collective disappointment with the way that American politics has trended.”
