Austrian Vice Chancellor Andreas Babler announced on 4 October 2026 that he will step down from the vice chancellorship and the leadership of the Social Democratic Party of Austria (SPÖ). The decision followed a four-hour meeting in Vienna attended by leaders from all nine provincial party branches. Babler will retain his post as Minister for Housing, Culture, Media, and Sport within the coalition government formed by the Austrian People's Party (ÖVP), the SPÖ, and the liberal NEOS. The transition is scheduled to begin at the turn of the year, providing a staged exit from top executive and party duties. Babler stated that his step was voluntary to end weeks of open leadership contention.

Succession arrangements and interim leadership

Finance Minister Markus Marterbauer has been designated to take over the office of Vice Chancellor in early 2027. The 61-year-old economist is currently undergoing medical therapy for a cancer condition that was made public during the summer. Because Marterbauer's physical recovery remains the precondition for assuming the office, the exact date of the government transfer remains dependent on his health progress. Babler noted that retaining his ministerial portfolio was also a specific request from Marterbauer to maintain continuity in daily cabinet administration.

At the party level, Babler will step aside at the turn of the year in favor of an interim dual leadership. Parliamentary group leader Philip Kucher and SPÖ Women's chair Eva-Maria Holzleitner will manage party affairs jointly until a formal successor is elected. The permanent party leader will be chosen by delegates at a party convention scheduled for spring 2027. The party leadership rejected a leadership bid made one week earlier by media executive Gerhard Zeiler, who had announced his candidacy in the Kronen Zeitung without securing broad internal party support.

Polling decline and leadership pressure

Babler, a former shift worker and mayor of Traiskirchen, took charge of the SPÖ in 2023 before joining the federal government in March 2023. His tenure faced internal resistance from party moderates over left-leaning policy proposals, including a federal inheritance tax and structural changes to press subsidies. The party recorded 21% in the subsequent parliamentary election, its lowest national election result. Recent polling placed the SPÖ at 15.5%, intensifying scrutiny over Babler's position while Marterbauer ranked as the most popular member of the federal cabinet.

Coalition reactions and snap election calls
