Chelsea sign Argentine midfielder Valentin Barco from Strasbourg on seven-year deal

The transfer

Chelsea confirmed the signing of Argentine midfielder Valentin Barco from Ligue 1 side Strasbourg on Sunday, 2 August. The 21-year-old (some outlets list his age as 22) has agreed a seven-year contract that runs until 2033. No official fee was disclosed, but Portuguese publication SAPO reported the deal at €40 million. Barco is the second player to move from Strasbourg to Stamford Bridge this summer, following striker Emmanuel Emegha, and the 13th transaction between the two clubs since the start of last season. Both are owned by the BlueCo consortium headed by Todd Boehly and Clearlake Capital.

Barco's path to London

A product of Boca Juniors' academy, Barco turned professional at 16 and earned a move to Brighton & Hove Albion in 2024 for £7.9 million. He struggled to break into the first team on the south coast and was sent on loan to Sevilla, then to Strasbourg. The French club signed him permanently for €10 million after a 2024/25 campaign in which he helped Strasbourg qualify for Europe and reach the Conference League semi-finals. Last season, he made 43 appearances in 2025/26, scoring three goals and adding nine assists; his total for Strasbourg across all competitions stands at 58 games, three goals and 11 assists.

World Cup cameo and Bellingham clash

Barco was included in Argentina's squad for the 2026 World Cup and made a single substitute appearance during the group stage. Argentina went on to lose the final 1-0 to Spain. The tournament also drew attention for a heated post-match exchange after the semi-final against England, when midfielder Jude Bellingham confronted Barco and slapped him, as reported by The Telegraph. The incident was captured by cameras and widely circulated, adding a layer of notoriety to the young Argentine's profile.

Summer rebuild under Alonso

Barco becomes the eighth confirmed signing of a busy window for Chelsea, who finished 10th in the Premier League last season and have since appointed Xabi Alonso as manager. Earlier arrivals include playmaker Morgan Rogers from Aston Villa, defender Maxence Lacroix from Crystal Palace, Atalanta's Marco Palestra, Sporting's Geovany Quenda, Strasbourg's Emegha, Brighton striker Danny Welbeck, and Kazakh forward Dastan Satpaev from Kairat Almaty. Brazilian left-back Denner from Corinthians has also been presented, taking the total to nine new faces by some counts. The spending spree has pushed Chelsea's outlay close to €400 million, according to SAPO.

Pre-season and season opener

Barco will link up with the squad later in pre-season. Chelsea are due to face Juventus in a friendly in Hong Kong on 5 August, before beginning their Premier League campaign away at Fulham on 24 August. The versatile midfielder, who can also operate at left-back, will compete for a place with Pep Chavarría and others as Alonso shapes his team for the new season.
