Bayern Munich drew 3-3 at Viking Stavanger on Tuesday, 13 October, in a Champions League match that turned on the dismissal of Michael Olise. The 24-year-old French forward was shown two yellow cards within seconds in the second half, which left Bayern to finish with ten men. Bayern had trailed 0-2 at half-time, came back through two second-half goals from Harry Kane and a third from Luis Diaz, and were ahead 3-2 when Olise was sent off. Viking's Herman Haugen headed the equaliser in the 90th minute.

How the second booking came about

Olise was first booked in the second half after a tussle with Tripic. Referee Georgi Kabakov was still displaying the yellow card for a tactical foul that had stopped a Viking counter when Olise threw the ball he was holding at Tripic's head. That throw earned a second caution within seconds, and the home crowd in Stavanger cheered the decision. The red card helped Viking back into the contest, and Tripic crossed for Haugen to head home the equaliser. The second booking came in the 74th minute, and Bayern then had to hold on with ten men.

Reactions on and off the pitch

Tripic celebrated after the final whistle. He told the local broadcaster TV2 that he had managed to irritate Olise and that one cannot play fairly against a side like Bayern. He added that he had waited 34 years for a moment like this, a remark reported by Focus. Viking midfielder Kristoffer Askildsen said he had thought Olise was an idiot as the ball flew. Bayern coach Vincent Kompany said the club had addressed the matter clearly with Olise, who needs to keep himself under better control.

“You cannot talk that away, you have to react on the pitch. That is the only thing that counts now.”

Bayern sporting director Max Eberl said Tripic had achieved his aim of getting a player sent off, and he left open whether Olise faces an internal fine.

Bayern's form and the weeks ahead

The early goal conceded and the draw recalled Bayern's 2-2 at Augsburg, though Kompany was not ready to call it a trend. Bayern had opened their Champions League campaign in September with a 5-0 win over Bodo/Glimt. Kane said Olise would be 'gutted' to miss the coming games and added that the forward would have to take responsibility and learn from the incident.

“He'll have to take responsibility obviously, he'll have to learn from it.”

Olise will miss Bayern's next Champions League match against Arsenal on 21 October. Bayern face RB Leipzig in the Bundesliga on Saturday, 17 October, with the games against Freiburg and Dortmund also due later in October. Joshua Kimmich said the team had been playing catch-up in the Bundesliga too. The timing of Manuel Neuer's return remains open.
