We came here as complete underdogs. We're trying to do something big and major, and this is now something that has come true.
Alajbegovic's breakthrough
Kerim Alajbegovic, an 18-year-old forward born in Germany to Bosnian parents, broke the deadlock in the 29th minute with a solo effort, evading three defenders before firing into the top corner. The goal underlined his rapid rise: he had already scored the winning penalty in the playoff semi-final against Wales that sent Bosnia to the tournament.
- Kerim Alajbegovic scores with a long-range strike to give Bosnia the lead.
- Edin Dzeko's cross deflects off a defender for an own goal, doubling Bosnia's advantage.
- Hassan Al-Haydos pulls one back for Qatar just before half-time.
- Ermin Mahmic scores Bosnia's third goal to secure the win.
Dzeko's milestone and the own goal
Captain Edin Dzeko, making his 150th international appearance at age 40, forced the second goal five minutes later when his cross deflected off a Qatari defender and spun past goalkeeper Mahmoud Abunada. Dzeko later struck the post as Bosnia threatened to run away with the game.
Qatar's brief fightback and Mahmic's clincher
Qatar pulled a goal back three minutes before half-time through captain Hassan Al-Haydos, who tapped in from close range after a well-worked move. The Asian side pressed for an equaliser after the break but created few clear chances. Substitute Ermin Mahmic settled the contest in the 80th minute, pouncing on a loose ball in the box and firing home to make it 3-1.
This last match allowed us to take one step ahead in Qatar football, Qatar history. I think that they showed that at least we were able to compete in these kinds of matches.
What comes next
Bosnia will face the United States in Los Angeles if they progress as one of the eight best third-placed teams. Coach Sergej Barbarez, who remained outwardly calm despite the achievement, said the young squad has a bright future. Qatar, who earned their first World Cup point with a draw against Switzerland, exit the tournament with coach Julen Lopetegui urging his young players to learn from the experience.
