Kostoulas delivers early breakthrough

Brighton & Hove Albion earned a 5-0 away victory against Coventry City in the fourth fixture of the Premier League season. Nineteen-year-old Greek striker Babis Kostoulas made his third consecutive start in the league under manager Fabian Hürzeler and proved active from the opening minutes. In the 17th minute, Kostoulas created Brighton's first clear opportunity, shooting into the side netting from a narrow angle against Coventry goalkeeper Carl Rushworth. The visiting side took the lead in the 35th minute when midfielder Pascal Groß directed a headed pass toward the penalty area. Kostoulas controlled the ball with his head, bypassed two Coventry defenders, and placed a low strike into the bottom left corner of Rushworth's net to open his Premier League account. The former Olympiacos forward celebrated the opening goal with a gesture inspired by Youssef El-Arabi, recording his second goal of the campaign across all competitions. Kostoulas had previously registered one goal and one assist during Brighton's 4-0 home victory over Norwegian club Tromsø in the Conference League play-offs.

Second-half control and Coventry red card

The visiting side doubled their lead six minutes into the second half through midfielder Malick Yalcouyé. Yalcouyé took advantage of a defensive miscommunication in the Coventry backline in the 51st minute, ran into space behind the defense, and finished past Rushworth to make the score 2-0. Coventry's position deteriorated further two minutes later when forward Taiwo Awoniyi committed a violent foul. Awoniyi received a straight red card in the 53rd minute for striking a Brighton opponent with his elbow, reducing the home team to ten players on the pitch. Brighton maintained sustained control over possession against the depleted hosts. Kostoulas continued to cause difficulties for Coventry's backline, earning a penalty for Brighton in the 69th minute after being fouled inside the 18-yard box. Groß converted the resulting spot kick in the 70th minute to extend Brighton's lead to 3-0.

Late strikes and Premier League standings

Brighton added two more goals in the final ten minutes of regulation and added time to complete the scoring. Club captain Lewis Dunk scored in the 83rd minute, launching a long-range shot from 35 metres out that beat Rushworth to make it 4-0. Midfielder Yasin Ayari concluded the match in the fourth minute of stoppage time, firing an accurate effort from outside the penalty area into the net. The victory moved Brighton to seven points from their opening four matches, placing the club in fourth position in the Premier League table level on points with Chelsea. Newly promoted Coventry City, coached by Frank Lampard, remain at the bottom of the division in 20th place with zero points after suffering four consecutive defeats. The five-goal defeat leaves Coventry as the only team in the Premier League yet to register a single point during the 2026 campaign.
