Departure after eight months

Nikos Broutzakis, businessman and co-owner of the online channel Axion Esti TV, announced on August 8, 2026, through a Facebook post that he is leaving "Hope for Democracy," the movement led by Maria Karystianou. Broutzakis said he had supported the effort for eight months with what he called tremendous stubbornness, passion, and self-sacrifice, both as an individual and through his channel, which has been active in movement activities in recent years. He said he believed the effort could become a genuine catalyst for overturning what he called a rotten political system and founding a new political culture with a human face. He said he initially believed in a course based on ethics, justice, and absolute truth, but that over time the vision drifted dangerously from its founding principles.

Internal transformation and structural criticism

Broutzakis described a gradual "internal transformation" of the movement, identifying four core problems. He accused the leadership of arbitrary decision-making, saying officials were dismissed and appointed at will, canceling any notion of collectivity. He said dissenting opinions were suppressed, with any criticism branded "heretical" and met with contempt rather than dialogue. He criticized the movement's refusal to adopt a charter, noting that the leadership's position that a charter constitutes "old-party practice" leaves room for arbitrariness and eliminates accountability. He stated that the absence of rules is not progress but "the perfect alibi for arbitrariness." He also said a closed decision-making group had formed that answers to no one, operating as a closed system rather than an open social movement. The result, he said, is that the movement's momentum is continuously weakening and a wave of departures of honest people who believed in the same vision is being recorded.

Treatment of departing members

Broutzakis criticized how the leadership treats those who choose to leave. He said former supporters and allies are now openly labeled "traitors" or "paid," or accused of wanting to take power from Karystianou. He rejected these accusations, calling them part of a coordinated "propaganda of guilt" that amounts to "character assassination." He argued that departure does not constitute betrayal but can be an act of consistency toward principles of transparency and accountability. He said the situation has led to the weakening of the initiative and the departure of people who had initially identified with its goals.

Despite his departure, Broutzakis said he will continue to be active on issues of justice and democracy through Axion Esti TV. He noted that the effort for a fairer society does not belong to a single entity but "to everyone" and must continue with terms of transparency and open participation.
