Modernizing the narrative and social media focus

All eight episodes of Mike Flanagan's television adaptation of Stephen King's 1974 horror novel Carrie became available to stream on Prime Video on 7 October 2026. The series stars Summer H. Howell as Carrie White and Samantha Sloyan as her mother, Margaret White. Flanagan, who previously directed King adaptations including Gerald's Game, Doctor Sleep, and The Life of Chuck, initially declined Amazon's offer before finding a modern premise centered on adolescent smartphone use. The narrative incorporates an anonymous Instagram account used to harass high school students, drawing inspiration from a 2017 cyberbullying incident in Albany, California. The series also changes Carrie's backstory: rather than enduring years of continuous bullying from elementary school peers as depicted in King's novel, she enters public school only after the death of her father, having previously grown up in complete domestic isolation.

The hereditary telekinesis twist

The season finale, titled "AP Physics", introduces a departure from earlier screen versions by establishing that Margaret White possesses latent telekinetic abilities of her own. While Margaret's powers are weak and largely suppressed compared to her daughter's, the plot twist reframes telekinesis as a hereditary trait passed down through maternal genetics. Flanagan explained that this shared condition allowed the production to explore how parental fears stem from unresolved personal trauma.

“We talked a lot about the genetic component of this... how genes express themselves, and we also talked about the reality of parents and teenagers today, especially -- and parents in general -- that, when there's friction, sometimes it's because a parent sees something in their kid that they have in themselves that they haven't learned how to deal with, and that kind of creates the fear.”

Sloyan, who previously played religious zealot Bev Keane in Flanagan's 2021 miniseries Midnight Mass, noted that knowing telekinesis is real alters Margaret's motivation from pure fanatical cruelty into a protective attempt to shield her daughter from the outside world.

“I do think it does play into so much of parents wanting, trying so hard for their kids not to suffer the same things that they suffered, and in doing so, sometimes create a new trauma for that kid.”

Expanded lore and psychic factions

To adapt King's novel into an eight-episode television series, the show builds out broader paranormal lore beyond Carrie's personal story. Seven of the eight episodes open with historical vignettes examining alleged psychic phenomena throughout history, dating back to Joan of Arc. The narrative introduces an astral projector named Emaline West, played by Thalia Dudek, who trains Carrie and later encourages her to inflict harm on classmates, ultimately influencing her actions during the prom disaster. Other additions include Amanda, portrayed by Katee Sackhoff, and an organization monitoring telekinetic individuals. Flanagan indicated that these unresolved plot threads were designed with the goal of continuing the series across three seasons.

Audience reception and departures from the novel

The adaptation prompted discussion among viewers regarding casting choices and narrative tone. Online commentators on X noted that the casting of Howell follows previous adaptations by Brian De Palma in 1976 and subsequent remakes in selecting a conventionally styled actress, contrasting with King's original book description of an awkward, heavier teenager with skin blemishes. Critical assessments also noted that the series portrays Carrie's peers and mother with greater empathy than the 1974 novel, while the presence of external psychic manipulation softens the direct personal revenge that drove the original prom climax.
