Fatal blaze in Pitrufquén

A fire broke out late Friday night at the El Edén nursing home in the Villa Comuy sector of Pitrufquén, located approximately 640 kilometers south of Santiago in Chile's La Araucanía region. The blaze started around 22:30 local time (01:30 GMT) and quickly swept through the building, trapping residents inside. Emergency crews and local authorities confirmed that 16 elderly residents died after flames engulfed the structure. A total of 26 residents were inside the long-stay facility when the incident began. Firefighters brought the blaze under control on Saturday morning, leaving the facility destroyed with collapsed corrugated metal roofing.

Rescue operation and municipal mourning

During the emergency, ten residents were rescued from the premises and transferred to a local hospital for medical care. The evacuation effort involved local firefighters, surrounding neighbors who rushed into the structure, and the single overnight caregiver responsible for all 26 residents. Pitrufquén Fire Department commander Felipe Salazar detailed the fast progression of the fire during the rescue attempt.

“The fire spread very fast and we were not able to get anyone else out.”

Following the deaths, Pitrufquén Mayor Jacqueline Romero decreed three days of municipal mourning across the commune. Romero reported that municipal staff faced difficulties contacting the relatives of nine victims, noting that some families lived in Santiago while others had no functioning contact details on file. Five victim families arrived at the Legal Medical Service in Temuco, located 30 kilometers away, to aid identification procedures.
