Manchester City sign 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from Lille for €100m

Terms of the transfer

Manchester City have signed 18-year-old midfielder Ayyoub Bouaddi from French club Lille on a five-year contract that runs until 2031, with a club option for an additional season. Although Manchester City did not disclose the financial details in their official announcement, Lille president Olivier Létang stated that the transfer fee reaches a minimum of 100 million euros ($117 million, or approximately 86 million pounds). The financial structure comprises a fixed base sum of 95 million euros alongside performance-based add-ons.

The agreement establishes a new benchmark for sales from Ligue 1, overtaking the 90 million euros paid by Saudi Pro League club Al Hilal to Paris Saint-Germain for Neymar in 2023. It also surpasses the previous transfer fee received by Lille for an 18-year-old player, set when defender Leny Yoro joined Manchester United for 62 million euros in 2024. While Létang stated in mid-July that the midfielder would remain in France for another campaign, strong interest from English football and Bouaddi's tournament performances elevated his market valuation by roughly 30 million euros.

Midfield restructuring under Maresca

Bouaddi's arrival is part of an extensive reshaping of Manchester City's midfield under manager Enzo Maresca, who signed a three-year contract in June following his departure from Chelsea. Maresca replaced Pep Guardiola after the coach concluded a 10-year term in which City won numerous domestic and continental honours. The squad has experienced substantial turnover in central positions during the current transfer window, led by 2024 Ballon d'Or winner Rodri departing for Barcelona following Spain's World Cup victory.

City also sanctioned the departures of Bernardo Silva and Tijjani Reijnders, who joined Saudi club Al-Qadsiah for approximately 61 million euros, while agreeing a 52 million pound deal to transfer Nico González to Newcastle. To replenish the midfield, City committed 116 million pounds ($158 million) last month to sign 23-year-old England international Elliot Anderson from Nottingham Forest. Maresca began his competitive tenure on Sunday with a 2-1 Premier League victory over Bournemouth, secured through two late goals.

Academy rise and international emergence

Bouaddi entered Lille's youth system in 2021 at age 13 after recruitment scouts spotted him playing for his local club in Creil, a town situated north of Paris. He made his first-team debut in the Europa Conference League against KI Klaksvík in October 2023, just three days after his 16th birthday, becoming the youngest player to feature in European club competition and the youngest in Lille's history. He later became the youngest player to reach 50 competitive appearances for the club, totalling 96 appearances across three senior seasons, including 30 Ligue 1 games last term.

On the international stage, Bouaddi represented France at youth levels, including five appearances for the French under-21 team alongside former Lille teammate Yoro. In May, he switched international allegiances to Morocco, debuting against Brazil at the World Cup and starting five of Morocco's six fixtures as they reached the quarter-finals before losing 2-0 to France. Following the Brazil fixture, manager Carlo Ancelotti described him as one of the best young players in world football. Profile and player approach

Off the pitch, Bouaddi passed his secondary academic examinations a year ahead of schedule, studies for a university degree, and regularly plays chess. On the pitch, he operates primarily as a holding and distribution midfielder rather than an attacking finisher, having recorded zero goals in 96 matches for Lille and zero goals in eight appearances for Morocco. Bouaddi identified Manchester City's coaching environment as the ideal destination for the next phase of his progression.
