Leadership proposal and Colau's response

Former Barcelona mayor Ada Colau confirmed on 6 October that multiple left-wing parties asked her to head the Frente Amplio alliance for the upcoming snap general election on 29 November. Speaking during an interview on La 2Cat, Colau stated that while she had not planned to return to frontline institutional politics, she remains at the disposal of progressive forces to help build consensus. Executive members of her party, Catalunya en Comú, view her potential candidacy as the optimal scenario for unifying the progressive space. Colau emphasized that the coalition must not focus solely on individual names, calling instead for a choral and wide-ranging platform centered on housing rights, curbs on speculation, and countering the far right.

Debate over open primaries

The coalition negotiations face immediate procedural friction between Movimiento Sumar and Podemos regarding how to select candidates. Podemos secretary general Ione Belarra and former minister Irene Montero have called for open primaries on 14 and 15 October to determine the ticket and leadership positions. Movimiento Sumar co-coordinator Verónica Barbero dismissed that timetable in an interview with RNE, stating that internal consensus and direct negotiations between party leaderships represent the proper mechanism. Colau acknowledged that open primaries are one possible instrument, but noted that organizing nationwide primary voting in a matter of days presents severe logistical challenges.

Tight deadlines and party participation

With 54 days remaining before polling on 29 November, political forces have until 16 October to officially register coalition agreements with election authorities. Culture Minister and Sumar spokesperson Ernest Urtasun reiterated that no organization should be excluded from the talks, welcoming input from across the political spectrum while urging internal negotiations rather than public disputes. Colau similarly urged that groups such as Compromís, Més, and the Chunta Aragonesista join the alliance alongside Podemos. She also expressed regret over the decision by Esquerra Republicana de Catalunya to stay out of the platform, despite earlier public backing for a unified front from ERC congressional spokesperson Gabriel Rufián.

Competing candidates in the progressive bloc

Beyond Colau, several other prominent figures within the coalition remain in contention to lead the electoral ticket. Health Minister Mónica García of Más Madrid and Culture Minister Ernest Urtasun have both indicated their willingness to head the slate, alongside Social Rights Minister Pablo Bustinduy. Más Madrid has advocated for lists with deep regional roots, while Izquierda Unida leader Antonio Maíllo has stressed the need to reflect the plural nature of the constituent groups. The negotiating parties are holding closed-door talks to resolve the ticket configuration before the registration cutoff on 16 October.
