Real Madrid wins race for Yan Diomande as PSG pulls out, refusing a 'disproportionate' market

Real Madrid are poised to complete the signing of Ivorian winger Yan Diomande from RB Leipzig after Paris Saint-Germain abruptly ended its pursuit, clearing the path for a transfer that will rank as Leipzig's record sale.

How the Madrid deal materialised

Madrid had an opening proposal worth €90m plus €10m in add-ons rejected by Leipzig around 10 days ago. The Spanish club returned with an improved offer, reported at €120m including a €100m fixed fee. While Leipzig have yet to formally respond to the latest bid and were holding out for a sum closer to €130m, confidence exists on all sides that an accord will be finalised. Diomande, who had already agreed personal terms with Madrid, is expected to fly to Spain during the coming days to undergo a medical and sign a five-year contract running until June 2031.

PSG's withdrawal and statement

PSG had been Diomande's preferred destination earlier in the window and the French club held a preliminary understanding with the player. On Sunday evening it dispatched a statement to French, Spanish and German press announcing its formal exit. The club said the sums demanded for the transfer and the player's salary expectations were "totally disproportionate and of a nature that would have unbalanced the market."

PSG will not deviate from its principles of rigorous financial management and squad balance. Two-time reigning European champion and the most decorated club of recent years, Paris Saint-Germain will not let itself be dragged into artificial price inflation or the manoeuvres of certain intermediaries.

The statement also signalled the club would continue its market strategy "with calm and confidence." PSG's head coach Luis Enrique viewed the asking price as excessive, and the Parisian management was unhappy with the agents' change of stance after an earlier understanding had been reached.

The player's profile

Diomande, 19, joined Leipzig from Leganés last season for €20m. In his debut Bundesliga campaign he recorded 13 goals and nine assists across 36 matches in all competitions, or 12 goals and nine assists in 33 league appearances: he missed one league game due to Africa Cup of Nations duty. At the 2026 World Cup he registered one assist in four matches for Ivory Coast, who were eliminated in the round of 32 by Norway.

Market impact and alternatives

Leipzig's previous record sale was Benjamin Sesko's move to Manchester United in 2025 for €76.5m plus add-ons; Josko Gvardiol's €90m transfer to Manchester City in 2023 is another benchmark this deal would surpass. Liverpool, who had also been interested in Diomande as a potential successor to Mohamed Salah, have shifted focus toward PSG's Bradley Barcola. Madrid's busy window under returning coach Jose Mourinho has already brought in Marc Cucurella, Bernardo Silva, Ibrahima Konate and Denzel Dumfries.
