Ukrainian drones strike Russian e-commerce hub in Orenburg as Zelensky rejects election calls

Debris from intercepted Ukrainian drones ignited a fire at an Ozon warehouse in Orenburg, 1,000 kilometres from Ukraine, while Kyiv faced strikes in Kharkiv and political debate over wartime voting.

Drone strikes target Ozon logistics hub in Orenburg

Ukrainian drones targeted Russian logistics infrastructure in Orenburg during overnight operations on 23 August 2026. The Russian Ministry of Defense reported that air defense units intercepted 328 Ukrainian drones across the country overnight. In the Orenburg region, situated roughly 1,000 kilometres from the Ukrainian border, Governor Yevgeny Solntsev reported that air defenses intercepted six incoming drones. Falling wreckage struck two industrial sites in the city's special economic zone, including a warehouse complex operated by Ozon, Russia's second-largest e-commerce retailer. Emergency services extinguished the resulting blaze, and municipal authorities confirmed that no casualties occurred on site.

Orenburg Mayor Albert Yumadilov confirmed the damage to the special economic zone in a public briefing.

Today our city was subjected to a drone attack. Several UAVs were shot down over the special economic zone, where our industrial enterprises are located. Fortunately, no one was injured. Debris fell on the territory of the Ozon logistics complex and a fire broke out, promptly extinguished by emergency services.

Following the impact, Ozon management evacuated more than 300 employees from the site. The company halted operations at the facility, temporarily suspended inbound deliveries from merchant sellers, and rerouted transport to bypass the damaged warehouse.

Campaign against dual-use corporate logistics

The Orenburg incident marks the second consecutive day of strikes against Ozon logistics facilities. On Saturday, 22 August 2026, a Ukrainian drone struck an Ozon logistics center in Russia's Samara region, the first confirmed attack on the retailer since the start of the conflict. In previous weeks, drone strikes also targeted Wildberries, Russia's largest e-commerce platform. Ukrainian defense officials stated that commercial logistics networks serve as distribution conduits for goods supplied to Russian combat units.

The Ukrainian Ministry of Defense outlined the operational intent behind striking commercial warehousing infrastructure.

Systematic attacks against storage centers of dual-use goods make enemy operations more difficult and have a negative impact on the Russian economy as a whole.

Russian strike on Kharkiv and regional diplomacy

Simultaneously, Russian forces carried out aerial attacks on Ukrainian cities. In Kharkiv, a Shahed drone struck the Osnovianskyi district, igniting fires across two private residential buildings. Kharkiv Mayor Ihor Terekhov confirmed that emergency crews treated four injured residents at the scene. The strikes took place as leaders from eight Nordic and Baltic countries (Denmark, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Latvia, Lithuania, Norway, and Sweden) arrived in Kyiv to confer with President Volodymyr Zelensky on expanding air defense networks. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen stressed that Ukraine urgently requires reinforced air defenses following statements by Russian President Vladimir Putin warning of destructive retaliatory actions.

Domestic dispute over wartime Ukrainian elections

In Kyiv, political discussions focused on democratic continuity during wartime martial law. Former Defense Minister Mykhailo Fedorov called on the government to establish a legal, safe, and realistic mechanism to hold national elections if the war continues, citing systemic corruption concerns. President Volodymyr Zelensky rejected the proposal during public remarks on 23 August 2026, arguing that organizing a vote during active hostilities would undermine national cohesion.

Zelensky stated that initiating an election campaign under wartime conditions would destabilize the state.

I believe that in a war like this, elections as such represent an enormous risk. Elections right now would be a tsunami for the country that would divide Ukraine.
