Suffolk heathland fire contained as UK confronts a summer of record wildfires from Scotland to the south coast
Firefighters have contained a heathland blaze in Suffolk that destroyed rare wildlife habitats, as the UK faces a summer of increasingly severe wildfires from the Scottish peatlands to the south coast of England.
Suffolk fire response
The blaze on heathland near Dunwich, Suffolk, started around 17:00 BST on 29 July and at its height covered 150 hectares (371 acres), an area equivalent to 210 football pitches. More than 100 firefighters were deployed, and up to 150 residents and holidaymakers were forced from the area. No injuries have been reported.
By Saturday 1 August, Suffolk Fire and Rescue Service said the situation had stabilised and crews had completed firebreaks up to 12 metres wide around the entire perimeter. A spokesperson said measures remained in place to protect nearby buildings. On Sunday, 90 to 100 firefighters stayed on site with 10 to 12 fire appliances, two water carriers and two off-road vehicles, responding to smaller fires as they emerged.

Environmental toll
The fire destroyed wildlife habitats at RSPB Minsmere and Dunwich Heath, home to some of the UK's rarest species including avocets, bearded tits and bitterns. The National Trust, which manages Dunwich Heath, said the site had only recently shown signs of recovery from extreme heat and drought in 2022. RSPB area manager Adam Rowlands estimated it would take some habitats 25 years to recover.
Recovery will be a long process, but nature is resilient, and so is the community.
The National Trust launched a fundraiser to help the landscape recover and create a more resilient habitat. Celia Richardson, the charity's director of communications and fundraising, said all donations would go directly to the site. Konik, Dartmoor and Exmoor ponies that graze the area were safe and being cared for.
Scotland's peatland fires
While the Suffolk fire was relatively small, Scotland has experienced three of the five largest wildfires ever recorded in the UK in recent years. The Dava-Carrbridge fire in Moray (2025), a fire in Galloway and Dumfries (2025) and the Flow Country fire near Caithness (2019) each burned more than 5,000 hectares. These fires spread into peat soils that were once too wet to ignite.

Climate change is making Scotland's blanket bogs drier for longer periods, turning what is normally a long-term carbon store into fuel. Once surface vegetation burns away, peat fires can smoulder underground for days or weeks, making them difficult to extinguish and allowing them to re-emerge unexpectedly. Scotland is predicted to become even hotter and drier over the next decades.
Southern England under pressure
Across southern England, fire services have faced a surge in outdoor blazes during recent heatwaves. Royal Berkshire Fire and Rescue Service responded to more than 250 fires in the open this year, including a large crop field fire near Hungerford Park on 10 July. On the Isle of Wight, a fire at Headon Warren burned for five days, requiring 80 firefighters at its peak, specialist vehicles and helicopter water drops. Fire engines were ferried across the Solent from the mainland to assist.
BBC South environment correspondent Jon Cuthill noted that protracted incidents quickly escalate costs. Dorset and Wiltshire Fire & Rescue Service recently invested in a £500,000 off-road Unimog, and Hampshire service added a new specialist fire engine at Rushmoor. Human activity, including campfires, has been linked to some ignitions, though the cause of the Isle of Wight fire remains unknown.
Learning from Australia
As European wildfires intensify, Australian researchers are combining satellite technology with Indigenous knowledge to better predict fire risk. Professor Marta Yebra, who heads the Bushfire Research Centre of Excellence in Canberra, uses satellite imagery to measure fuel moisture content. Indigenous fire practitioner Adrian Webster then verifies the data on the ground using traditional ecological signs such as plant colour, scent and shade cover.
She had all this amazing data, but there was no translation to what it meant on the ground, so it was kind of useless. But through an Indigenous perspective, it was not useless. It was a map that could guide you through the country and, if you understood it, take you directly into a place that is ready to burn.
Yebra's project, born from Australia's Black Summer fires of 2019–20, offers a model that could inform European firefighting as climate change extends fire seasons across the continent.
