A sprint decided by thousandths of a second

The men's elite road race at the European Cycling Championships concluded on Sunday along a 196.3-kilometer route from Ljubljana to Šenčur. Italy's Giulio Ciccone attacked into the final right-hand corner with 300 meters remaining, establishing a gap of approximately ten meters over Remco Evenepoel. The Belgian rider pursued Ciccone along the home straight and lunged his bike forward at the line. Race commissaires analyzed the timing system and awarded the gold medal to Evenepoel by a margin of 0.0028 seconds, or 2.8 milliseconds, leaving Ciccone with the silver medal.

Ciccone seeks verification at the line

On Monday, Ciccone published a statement on Instagram addressing the outcome. While describing Evenepoel as the strongest rider on the day, the 2023 Tour de France mountains classification winner stated that repeated viewings of the finish line footage raised unresolved doubts about the result.

“I have rewatched the available footage hundreds of times, and in the shots where the finish line is visible, I keep seeing a scenario that I cannot reconcile with that verdict.”

Ciccone clarified that he was not attempting to replace the timing system with television broadcast footage, but specifically asked to inspect the raw photo-finish capture aligned precisely with the physical line.

“Because if a European title is decided by 2.8 thousandths of a second, I think it is fair to ask that that very moment be shown with the same precision with which the result was determined.”

Regulatory framework and timing criteria

Race officials met with Ciccone and Italian federation technicians on Monday morning to outline how the photo-finish apparatus operates. Cycling timing systems record several thousand vertical scans per second along the entry edge of the stripe rather than taking a conventional two-dimensional photograph. Under UCI article 1.2.101, a finish occurs when the front tire contacts the vertical plane extending from the leading edge of the finish line, and the photo-finish verdict is classified as definitive. Had commissaires determined the finish to be an inseparable dead heat, governing rules would have mandated a 1,000-meter sprint reride between the two riders to decide the title.

Standing of the European Championship result

The gold medal in Šenčur completed a sequence of international honours for Evenepoel, adding to his 2024 Olympic road race title and world time-trial victories. For Ciccone, who rides for Lidl-Trek, the Italian squad voiced reservations immediately following the race before the rider issued his individual request. Ciccone noted that receiving the verified alignment image would conclude the matter, though governing regulations provide no standard mechanism to overturn a certified photo-finish.
