European complaint over public broadcasting

The conservative delegation based its submission on a statistical review of the broadcast's editorial record since the current government assumed power. According to the data submitted to the Commission, out of 404 investigative segments examined since Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni took office, 43.5% focused in various ways on Brothers of Italy and its political leader. Lawmakers contended that these broadcasts relied on suppositions and the continuous use of conditional phrasing to construct pre-arranged theories rather than present verified findings. Cavedagna, who previously served as a rapporteur on the European Media Freedom Act, maintained that public service journalism must adhere to explicit requirements of impartiality.

Rai leadership review and ethics inquiry

The political dispute in Brussels unfolds alongside impending managerial decisions at Rai headquarters in Rome. Rai Chief Executive Officer Giampaolo Rossi holds a formal dossier prepared by the network's Ethics Committee regarding potential breaches of professional conduct rules by Ranucci. The ethical review centres on the broadcaster's relationship with Valter Lavitola, who was arrested on charges of instigating a car bomb attack that targeted Ranucci's vehicle near his home last October. The Rome public prosecutor's office continues to treat Ranucci as an injured party in that criminal investigation. Corporate management does not plan to suspend Ranucci, who holds the permanent title of deputy director ad personam of the network's in-depth reporting division.

Impending editorial reorganization

Rossi holds direct editorial authority over network personnel and is preparing to decide whether to replace Ranucci as host of the flagship Rai3 programme. Network executives intend to present Ranucci with three internal reassignment options rather than removing him from the broadcaster entirely. The decision comes after months of scrutiny surrounding the editorial direction of the investigative unit. While opposition lawmakers continue to characterize any personnel shift as political interference, ruling party officials maintain that management is exercising normal governance over public service programming.
