Man arrested after partner, 34, stabbed to death in Barcelona flat as child looks on
A man was arrested early Wednesday after his 34-year-old partner was stabbed to death in a Barcelona flat on Tuesday evening, with at least one of their children present.
The attack
Police received a call at 19:47 on Tuesday reporting an aggression inside a home on Calle Andrade, in the Sant Martí de Provençals neighbourhood of Barcelona's Sant Martí district. Officers arriving at the scene found a 34-year-old woman with severe stab wounds. Emergency medical teams treated her at the flat but were unable to save her life, and her death was confirmed shortly afterwards. Police sources told several Spanish outlets that the woman was attacked by her partner and that at least one of the couple's two minor children was present during the assault.
Manhunt and arrest
After the stabbing, the suspect fled the area in a Ford vehicle. The car was later discovered burned in the neighbouring Sant Andreu district, with no one inside, leading investigators to believe he continued his escape on foot. The Mossos d'Esquadra launched a search operation and detained the man at approximately 01:25 on Wednesday. The arrest was confirmed by the Catalan police in a post on X.

Investigation
The División de Investigación Criminal (DIC) of the Mossos d'Esquadra has taken over the case and is treating it as a machista crime, the term used in Spain for gender-based killings of women by partners or former partners. Despite the arrest, the investigation remains open as detectives work to establish the full circumstances of the death. The suspect is described by police sources as being of South American origin.
National toll
If confirmed as a gender-based killing, this would be the 32nd such death in Spain so far in 2026 and the 1,373rd since official statistics began in 2003. Before this case, the counts stood at 31 women killed by partners or ex-partners this year. In Catalonia alone, it would be the third victim of 2026, following the killing of a woman in Figueres in broad daylight and the death of another victim in Tortosa who succumbed in hospital after weeks in critical condition following a severe beating. The 2003 series stood at 1,372 women before this death was recorded.
