The decision, approved by CONI's executive board and ratified by its National Council, requires FIGC president Giovanni Malagò to step down from the presidency and immediately take charge as special administrator. The governance intervention addresses legal inquiries commissioned by Olympic authorities regarding Malagò's election in June 2026, when he secured over 68% of the vote. Those reviews determined that technical non-compliance occurred because Malagò was not formally registered as a member of the football federation at the time of the ballot. The compromise establishes an interim framework to regularise his administrative standing while maintaining continuity in daily operations.

New election schedule and leadership standing

Following the ratification at the CONI National Council in Rome, Malagò confirmed that new presidential elections for the federation will take place on 14 December 2026. This schedule falls well within the formal deadline set by CONI, which mandated an extraordinary elective assembly no later than 31 January 2027 to restore federal offices in compliance with statutory rules. Malagò indicated he intends to run as a presidential candidate once his formal registration is regularised, noting that he had maintained his integrity throughout the dispute.

Positions from CONI and government authorities

CONI President Luciano Buonfiglio defended the decision to install Malagò as extraordinary commissioner, pointing to the former president's administrative record and the need for stability around the men's national football team. Buonfiglio referenced his own previous career in the Italian canoe federation, where discovery of unstamped ballots led him to withdraw and face a fresh election. He explained that Malagò was similarly caught by a procedural failure that should not permanently bar him from office.

League endorsement and institutional priorities

Lega Serie A officially endorsed Malagò's appointment as extraordinary commissioner, having originally backed his candidacy for the FIGC presidency. The top-flight league noted that resolving the administrative impasse is necessary to maintain momentum on several pending institutional dossiers. These responsibilities include advancing a legislative sports reform bill currently before the Italian Senate, preparing stadium infrastructure and organisational logistics to co-host the Euro 2032 tournament, managing the domestic match calendar, and handling international relations. The leadership arrangement also aims to stabilise the broader Italian football structure following the sporting setback of failing to qualify for three consecutive World Cups.
