Two Greek firefighters, ages 25 and 58, die trapped by flames in Rethymno wildfire

The fatal entrapment

A wildfire broke out early on Wednesday afternoon (29 July) in the Krya Vrysi area of Rethymno, southern Crete. Two firefighters responding to the blaze became trapped by flames at a junction leading toward Melambes. They were found unconscious outside their service vehicle, which had been caught by the fire at a rough-terrain location within the active fire zone. According to reports citing local media, the two men were a 25-year-old seasonal firefighter and a 58-year-old firefighter on a five-year contract from the Agia Foteini station. Some early accounts described both as seasonal firefighters, giving ages of 27 and 23.

Today is an exceptionally difficult day for the Fire Service. During the extinguishing operation of the agricultural-forest fire in the Krya Vrysi Rethymnou area, two firefighters lost their lives.

Official reactions

Evangelos Tournas, Minister of Climate Crisis and Civil Protection, confirmed the ages and expressed condolences to the families, relatives, and colleagues of the two men. He described the loss as particularly painful for the Fire Service and the entire country. The governing New Democracy party issued a statement saying the firefighters "served with self-denial until the last moment, protecting human lives and citizens' property." The Fire Service's own statement said the two "fell heroically in the line of duty for the protection of life, citizens' goods, and the natural environment."

Today the Fire Service mourns the loss of two of its people. Two firefighters, aged 58 and 25, lost their lives in the line of duty while operating at the difficult fire in Nea Krya Vrysi, Rethymno.

Firefighting effort and fire behaviour

As of Wednesday afternoon, the fire front was described as uncontrolled and stretching over 15 kilometres, according to Sifis Vavourankis, president of the Krya Vrysi community. The main front was being fought by 125 firefighters, six groups of mobile units from the 3rd and 19th Special Disaster Response Units, 27 fire engines, four helicopters, and four aircraft. Water tankers and earth-moving machinery from the Municipality of Agios Vasileios were also deployed. Five ambulances were on site, and two civilians who had been assisting the firefighting effort were reported injured. A 112 emergency alert was sent to residents of the area, instructing them to be on standby, and a subsequent evacuation message was issued for Krya Vrysi.

The front is uncontrolled, over 15 kilometres, and two more citizens who were helping with the extinguishing operation have been injured.

Unfolding tragedy

The fire began around midday on Wednesday. Early reports said the two victims were riding in a semi-truck, while later accounts referenced a 4x4 fire service vehicle; the vehicle became trapped at a remote point and was overwhelmed by the flames. The two men were discovered outside the vehicle. The Fire Service confirmed the deaths without providing further immediate details, stating that the official leadership was awaiting a full account of the circumstances. The fire was still active as of late afternoon, with firefighting forces continuing their battle against the flames.
