He's a really good player. He is still really young and still has a lot to learn and a lot to improve on but he's really humble and still working, so I'm happy for him to get his first minutes. I hope, for him, it's going to continue like that.

Lacey's performance

Shea Lacey, deployed as a No. 10 behind Mbeumo, was United's most dangerous attacker in the first half. Despite his slight frame, he used his acceleration to wriggle free of markers and drive the team forward. His best moment came when he flicked the ball with the outside of his right foot to escape two defenders and whip in a cross that Mbeumo nearly converted. It was Lacey's dribble that won the penalty early in the second half. The 18-year-old was substituted in the 73rd minute after an encouraging display. Lacey made two brief Premier League appearances last season and was sent off in an FA Cup tie against Brighton, but this performance reminded supporters of his potential. He faces a logjam at No. 10 behind Bruno Fernandes and could be loaned out to gain regular first-team football.

Mbeumo's impact

Bryan Mbeumo's double took his pre-season tally to three goals in two matches, following a strike in the 5-0 win over Rosenborg. The Cameroonian international, who can operate on the right wing or as a central striker, said the team executed their game plan.

We had a clear plan before the game, everyone stuck to it and made the game enjoyable. We work really hard during training for these games, the main goal is to be ready for the season starting. I have done great things on the right but also as a striker. I think I am more experienced on the wing but I enjoy playing as a striker. For an offensive player, it is always good to score for the team.

Pre-season context

The match was United's second win of the summer, having previously beaten Rosenborg 5-0 and lost one of their two earlier friendlies. Michael Carrick named a strong lineup that included Amad Diallo up front and a midfield pairing of Mason Mount and Andrey Santos, both of whom continued to impress.
