Entry into politics

Franco Gabrielli, former chief of the Italian State Police, announced his decision to enter politics in an interview published by Corriere della Sera on 2 October 2026. Gabrielli stated that he will not establish an independent political party, opting instead to support the initiative led by Ernesto Maria Ruffini. He explained that his decision was made without seeking guarantees, preconditions, or future government appointments, emphasizing that establishing a coherent political project takes priority over personal roles.

“I could have waited for the formation of a government that might assign me some role. But that is not what interests me. I believe it is more important to get personally involved in building a new idea of the country.”

Centre-left positioning and alliances

Gabrielli placed the initiative firmly within the centre-left coalition, explicitly rejecting the concept of an equidistant or self-sufficient centrist formation. He characterized isolated centrist projects as destined for political irrelevance, advocating instead for a broad alliance focused on governance rather than an aggregation of political acronyms opposing a shared adversary. When discussing potential coalition partners, Gabrielli placed no veto on Matteo Renzi, observing that the Italia Viva leader has consistently sought alignment within the centre-left. Regarding Carlo Calenda, Gabrielli noted that the initiative must formulate policy proposals capable of appealing to him and his voters. Addressing the possibility of coalition primaries, he insisted that agreement on a policy programme, political boundaries, and shared rules must be established before asking citizens to select a leader.

“Our placement is in the centre-left, with the ambition of making it broader, credible, and capable of governing. Not a sum of acronyms united against someone; an alliance built around an idea of the country.”

Institutional career and confidentiality

Reflecting on his background, Gabrielli recounted his early political participation between the ages of 14 and 24 within the youth movement of Christian Democracy during the leadership of Benigno Zaccagnini. Following that decade of youth activism, he completed 38 years in public administration, serving in senior roles across the national police, civil protection, emergency management, and intelligence services. In response to questions regarding sensitive institutional knowledge acquired during his career, Gabrielli stated that information gathered in public office belongs to the state rather than individuals. He rejected the compilation of personal dossiers, noting that confidentiality duties remain legally binding after leaving public office and citing Article 54 of the Italian Constitution regarding discipline and honour.

Criticism of government security policy

Gabrielli also addressed the broader national political landscape, commenting on the recent rise of Roberto Vannacci. He stated that the growing support for Vannacci demonstrates administrative shortcomings by Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni's government, particularly on issues concerning security and immigration. Gabrielli argued that statements made by political figures while in opposition do not reflect the complex requirements of governing state institutions. He emphasized that the initiative alongside Ruffini seeks to provide a credible programmatic alternative centered on public administration and institutional governance.
