Theatrical launch and creative leadership

Warner Bros. has officially scheduled Game of Thrones: Aegon's Conquest for release in cinemas worldwide on 1 June 2029, marking the franchise's first transition to the big screen. British director Owen Harris, who served as an executive producer and directed three episodes of the first season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms, will direct the feature film. Harris previously gained industry recognition for helming the Emmy-winning Black Mirror episode "San Junipero". American screenwriter Beau Willimon, an Oscar nominee for The Ides of March and a seven-time Emmy nominee for his work on House of Cards, Andor, and Severance, was confirmed as the project's writer in March 2026. The studio formally introduced the production at CinemaCon in Las Vegas in April, following initial development reports in November 2024.

Historical setting in Westeros

The narrative takes place approximately 300 years before the events of Game of Thrones and 150 years before the events depicted in House of the Dragon. The storyline chronicles the arrival of the Targaryen family in Westeros after fleeing the cataclysm known as the Doom of Valyria. Aegon I Targaryen, accompanied by his sister-wives Visenya and Rhaenys, mounts a military campaign across the continent supported by three dragons: Balerion the Black Dread, Vhagar, and Meraxes. The campaign forces six of the seven kingdoms into submission while Dorne maintains its independence, establishing the ruling Targaryen dynasty under the family motto "Fire and Blood". The conquest directly established foundational lore elements, including the capital of King's Landing and the Iron Throne, marking the first time Aegon I will appear on screen. Warner Bros. has not announced casting for Aegon, Visenya, or Rhaenys.

Evolution of franchise film strategy

The theatrical project follows a change in corporate strategy for Warner Bros. Discovery, which avoided transitioning the television property to cinemas during its original broadcast run. In 2013, two years after the show premiered, co-creators David Benioff and Dan Weiss proposed concluding the storyline of Jon Snow and Daenerys Targaryen with three feature films, but HBO executives rejected the plan. The original television series, starring Kit Harington, Emilia Clarke, and Sophie Turner, concluded in May 2019 with the sixth episode of its eighth season, accumulating 59 Emmy awards between 2011 and 2019. Author George R. R. Martin explained in 2015 why he had resisted earlier opportunities to condense A Song of Ice and Fire into movies.

Expanding screen adaptations

Executive changes at Warner Bros. Discovery and the commercial performance of multi-platform properties like Batman and Dune encouraged the studio to pursue film releases alongside its television slate. HBO continues to produce additional series set in Martin's fictional world, having broadcast the third season of House of the Dragon during the summer and scheduling the second season of A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms for 2027. Harris previously directed the A Knight of the Seven Kingdoms episode titled "In the Name of the Mother". The 2029 film will depict the foundational war that established the noble dynasties, political structures, and lineage conflicts that drive subsequent television narratives.
