Rising protection rate alongside falling claims

The proportion of asylum seekers granted legal status in Germany increased during the first six months of 2026, even as the overall volume of new applications dropped. According to data provided by the German federal government, the adjusted protection rate administered by the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees (Bamf) reached 47.4% in the first half of 2026. That marks an increase from the 37.5% adjusted protection rate recorded across the entire calendar year of 2025. The adjusted rate calculation strips out formal procedural outcomes where authorities do not examine the factual merits of an asylum claim, such as cases where responsibility rests with another European Union member state under Dublin rules. Concurrently, first-time asylum applications in Germany declined from approximately 72,800 in the first half of 2025 to more than 39,600 over the same period in 2026.

Decisions by country of origin

Afghanistan stood as the primary country of origin for people submitting asylum applications in Germany throughout the first half of 2026. Asylum applicants originating from Afghanistan received an adjusted protection rate of 89.3% during this six-month timeframe. For Afghan women specifically, German migration authorities granted protection status in nearly 95% of all adjudicated cases. That elevated rate follows an October 2024 judgment from the European Court of Justice, which ruled that women fleeing Afghanistan fundamentally qualify for refugee status due to systematic oppression under the Taliban government that took power in 2021. For applicants arriving from Iran, the adjusted protection rate stood at 42.2% during the first half of 2026. In addition, refugee arrivals from Syria decreased following the change of power in Damascus, whereas displaced people from Ukraine remain exempt from standard asylum procedures under the European Union Temporary Protection Directive.

Impact of family protection rules

Family-based status claims constituted a large portion of all successful asylum determinations in Germany during the first six months of 2026. Federal migration authorities granted protection status on the basis of family protection in 21,195 individual cases during the first half of the year. This total represented 45.6% of all positive decisions rendered by the agency, a figure that includes cases where formal deportation bans were established. The statistics were published in an official government response to a parliamentary inquiry submitted by the Left Party parliamentary group in the Bundestag.

Low utilization of penal sanctions

The government disclosure also reviewed the impact of criminal provisions enacted in February 2024 against individuals who submit false or incomplete information during the asylum process. Over the period since the regulation took effect, the Federal Office for Migration and Refugees submitted a total of three criminal complaints. One of those three complaints was subsequently dropped by prosecutors citing insignificance and an absence of public interest.
