Structure and operational scope of the new formation

The German Bundeswehr will establish its first dedicated drone regiment in 2027 to centralize and expand the military's unmanned operations. Defence Minister Boris Pistorius announced the initiative on 1 October 2026 during a visit to the military training grounds in Bergen, Lower Saxony. The planned formation will comprise up to 600 soldiers and will operate unmanned systems with ranges extending up to 500 kilometres. In addition to aerial systems, the unit will deploy unmanned ground vehicles to support land combat operations. Pistorius identified the rapid integration of autonomous and remotely operated technology as a requirement drawn directly from the war in Ukraine.

“Anyone who wants to be successful on land simply has to master the use of unmanned systems.”

Armoured division integration and loitering munition trials

The new unmanned unit is planned to become part of the 10th Panzer Division, which also includes Panzer Brigade 45 deployed in Lithuania to secure NATO's eastern flank. The regiment is scheduled to receive new loitering munitions, commonly described as kamikaze drones, which are currently undergoing technical testing in the Bundeswehr ahead of troop delivery in 2027. At the Bergen training grounds, Pistorius inspected an ongoing experimental series where military units, researchers, and industrial developers are testing over 40 defence items for tactical performance and compatibility with existing IT networks. German military planners and Pistorius noted that unmanned aerial vehicles complement rather than replace conventional platforms such as tanks, combat aircraft, or naval vessels. The initiative follows assessments by Army Inspector Lieutenant General Christian Freuding, who previously coordinated German military assistance for Ukraine and called for rapid deployment of unmanned platforms during the Freedom Shield 2026 exercise in Lithuania. Freuding emphasized that coordinating armoured units with drone pilots, electronic warfare operators, and drone defence teams is critical for ground forces.

Expansion of training bases and counter-drone units

The regiment announcement coincides with wider organisational adaptations across the Bundeswehr to integrate drone warfare and counter-unmanned tactics. A dedicated training and exercise facility for drone operations is being built this year at the Tank Troop School in Munster, Lower Saxony. Pistorius visited the Munster base in May 2026, pointing to the role of drone swarms and cost-effective unmanned platforms on evolving battlefields. German forces also tested unmanned operations and defensive tactics during the Grand Quadriga 2026 military exercise in Bergen. To protect against hostile systems, the Bundeswehr mandated that all armed service branches establish rapid reaction counter-drone elements starting in July 2026. Pistorius inspected counter-drone teams in Schortens in June 2026, noting that unmanned platforms have become standard equipment in daily military operations.
