Government reaction to the Thessaloniki address

Greek government spokesperson and Deputy Minister to the Prime Minister Pavlos Marinakis delivered a point-by-point rebuttal to PASOK leader Nikos Androulakis following his address at the 90th Thessaloniki International Fair. Speaking from the Vellidion conference centre in Thessaloniki, Androulakis outlined his party's policy platform and alternative vision for government. Marinakis responded by characterizing the opposition leader's speech as an uncosted catalog of spending commitments that borrowed heavily from policies the current administration has already enacted. The spokesperson asserted that Androulakis continued to attack the government while simultaneously presenting measures that the state is actively executing.

“Mr. Androulakis's speech had everything: a rain of billions, cost-free promises, and policy proposals, many of which are already being implemented by the government, which he systematically insults.”

Disputes over housing policy and healthcare reform

Marinakis focused significant criticism on Androulakis's social policy proposals, beginning with the opposition's platform on housing affordability. The PASOK leader pledged to introduce restrictions on short-term rentals and offer incentives to encourage property owners to open vacant residential properties. Marinakis countered that regulatory curbs on short-term leasing arrangements are already in place and that state incentive programs targeting vacant homes are already operational. The dispute extended to healthcare commitments, where Androulakis advocated for the rollout of national preventive health screening programs and upgraded hospital infrastructure across Greece. In response, Marinakis pointed out that nationwide preventive screening initiatives are already functioning, while hospital renovations are currently being executed as part of an overhaul of the National Health System (ESY) funded by resources from the European Union Recovery and Resilience Facility.

Education proposals and the Article 86 constitutional dispute

The government spokesperson also addressed PASOK's educational proposals and its position on constitutional reform. In his Thessaloniki speech, Androulakis called for systemic changes to secondary education, including the establishment of a New Lyceum and the introduction of a National Baccalaureate (Ethniko Apolytirio). Marinakis dismissed these proposals as redundant, noting that the Ministry of Education has already initiated a formal dialogue process regarding the structural reform of secondary schools. Turning to constitutional matters, Marinakis challenged Androulakis's pledge to amend Article 86, which governs the legal liability and special prosecution procedures for cabinet ministers, during the next Revisionary Parliament. The spokesperson stated that PASOK's platform contradicts its legislative record, pointing out that the party voted against revising Article 86 during the initial parliamentary vote held in the sitting legislature.

Unfunded salary and pension commitments

Economic pledges formed the final pillar of Marinakis's critique, specifically regarding PASOK's promises to restore bonus benefits for workers and retirees. Androulakis pledged the reinstatement of a 13th-month salary for public sector employees alongside a 13th pension payment for Greek retirees. Marinakis stated that the opposition leader failed to provide any fiscal breakdown, cost calculation, or funding mechanism for these public outlays. According to the spokesperson, the entire presentation lacked concrete budgetary figures, leaving the electorate without an understanding of how these state expenditures would be financed.

“The only thing we did not hear, once again, from Mr. Androulakis was a realistic and costed plan for the country.”
