Haaland's late strike sends Norway past Ivory Coast and into World Cup last 16
Erling Haaland scored in the 86th minute to give Norway a 2-1 win over Ivory Coast in the World Cup round of 32, becoming the first European team to reach the knockout stage.
The decisive moment
With the match heading for extra time at AT&T Stadium in Arlington, Erling Haaland provided the breakthrough. Patrick Berg laid the ball into the Manchester City forward's path, and Haaland steered a low shot into the net from close range. The goal, his fifth in three World Cup appearances, booked Norway's place in the last 16.
How the match unfolded
A flat opening half came to life in the 39th minute. Martin Odegaard found Antonio Nusa on the left, and the RB Leipzig winger cut inside before curling a shot into the far corner. Ivory Coast pushed after the break, and substitute Amad Diallo equalised in the 74th minute with a solo dribble through the Norwegian defence, finishing calmly. Norway regained control and Haaland settled the contest four minutes from time.

European hopes rest on Norway
Norway are the first European side to advance to the round of 16 after early exits for Germany and the Netherlands. They will face Brazil in the next round. Coach Stale Solbakken's team have now won two of their three matches at the tournament, their only defeat a 4-1 loss to France in the group finale.
Ivory Coast's campaign ends
Ivory Coast reached the knockout phase by finishing second in Group E, impressing with defensive discipline and tactical patience. Coach Emerse Fae's side fought back through Diallo but could not contain Haaland when it mattered. Nicolas Pepe and Yan Diomande struggled to make an impact against a compact Norwegian defence.
Key performers
Beyond the goalscorers, Odegaard's creativity from midfield was decisive, while goalkeeper Orjan Nyland made a crucial stoppage-time save to preserve the lead. Haaland's winner cemented his status as the tournament's joint-top scorer and underlined Norway's reliance on individual quality in tight knockout contests.
