Russell on pole for Spanish GP; Leclerc 'ashamed' after qualifying crash, Antonelli risks race penalty
George Russell took pole position for the Spanish Grand Prix ahead of Lewis Hamilton, while Charles Leclerc crashed and called himself 'ashamed'. Championship leader Kimi Antonelli, who qualified third, now faces a potential five-second penalty for repeatedly exceeding track limits during the race.
Russell reclaims pole in Barcelona
Mercedes secured its seventh consecutive pole position as George Russell stormed to the top spot in qualifying at the Circuit de Barcelona-Catalunya. The Briton's final flying lap in Q3 was over three tenths quicker than teammate Kimi Antonelli. Lewis Hamilton came within 0.064 seconds of stealing pole for Ferrari, but a lack of battery energy on his final run left him just short. The result puts two British drivers on the front row, with Antonelli starting third and leading a chasing group of Norris, Verstappen, Hadjar and Piastri.
It will be a challenging race, we have to manage many variables. But I'm certain this car will win races, because we are close and the development is going in the right direction.
Leclerc's second crash in two weeks
Charles Leclerc crashed heavily during Q3, losing control under braking and hitting the tyre wall. It was his second consecutive qualifying accident, following a shunt at his home race in Monaco. The Monegasque driver, who will start from 10th on the grid, did not hide his disappointment.
I have no excuse, I'm simply ashamed. It's an error I shouldn't have made. I'm especially disappointed because everything was going very well this weekend. The feeling in the car was excellent and it's a shame not to have been able to turn that into a result.
Leclerc sits fourth in the drivers' standings with 75 points, 81 behind leader Antonelli. The 28-year-old now faces a recovery drive in Sunday's race.
Antonelli under scrutiny for track limits
Championship leader Kimi Antonelli has already received two warnings during the race for exceeding track limits at the Barcelona circuit. Race control has cautioned the Mercedes driver that a third infringement will trigger a five-second time penalty. McLaren, whose driver Lando Norris has been running close behind, believes Antonelli has exceeded the white line on multiple occasions and has reported the incidents to the stewards.
On the flying lap I couldn't extract the potential. The tyres struggled with the heat and it was difficult to make them last a whole lap. Maybe I pushed too hard. But our race pace in practice wasn't bad at all and the race will be long.
The 19-year-old Italian, who has led the championship from the early rounds, must now balance pace with precision to avoid a penalty that could cost him valuable points.
