Attack on Farnesina infrastructure

The Italian Ministry of Foreign Affairs announced on Thursday that its central website became the target of an ongoing cyberattack starting in the morning. Technical safeguards and automated security infrastructure contained the incident as it unfolded, preventing disruptions to public services or administrative downtime. In an official bulletin, the ministry confirmed that operational systems remained fully functional throughout the event. Technicians are monitoring network stability in real time in partnership with the National Strategic Hub (Polo Strategico Nazionale) and competent domestic security authorities. The government did not identify specific suspects, hacker collectives, or state-sponsored entities behind the technical offensive.

The ministry released a formal communication detailing the defensive response:

“Since this morning, the Ministry of Foreign Affairs website has been the target of a cyberattack; so far, this has been effectively mitigated by security systems, causing no service disruptions.”

Modernization and European cooperation

Deputy Prime Minister and Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani connected the defense to ongoing technological upgrades across Italy's diplomatic machinery. Tajani emphasized the structural role of recent administrative changes in repelling the intrusion:

“Cybersecurity is a central element of the Farnesina reform approved last year. We have strengthened in recent months our capabilities for prevention, monitoring, and response to threats, adopting all necessary countermeasures also on the technological level.”

Diplomatic exchange over 2027 vote

The technical incident unfolded against existing diplomatic friction between Rome and Moscow regarding potential foreign interference. Earlier on Thursday morning, Russian Foreign Ministry spokeswoman Maria Zakharova criticized Tajani during a press briefing in Moscow reported by RIA Novosti. Zakharova addressed comments made by the Italian minister regarding the threat of Russian meddling in Italy's scheduled 2027 parliamentary elections. She asserted that warnings from European officials regarding election manipulation were disrespectful toward the Italian electorate. Zakharova further argued that accusations concerning Russian hackers and the Kremlin had become routine narratives repeated throughout the collective West during democratic electoral contests.

During her briefing, Zakharova addressed the claims raised in Rome:
