The 25-year-old Mamelodi Sundowns player was found dead at a residence in Cape Town, days after appearing in all three of South Africa's group matches at the 2026 World Cup. Police are awaiting forensic results, while local sources report he had been suffering from depression.
Discovery in Cape Town
Jayden Adams, a midfielder for South African champions Mamelodi Sundowns and the national team, was found dead in Schotsche Kloof, Cape Town, on 11 July 2026. He was 25. Police have confirmed the recovery of the body and said they are awaiting the results of a forensic examination before determining the cause of death. Several South African news outlets, citing sources close to the player, have reported that Adams took his own life after struggling with depression.
A World Cup overshadowed by loss
Adams had returned only days earlier from the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where he featured in all three of South Africa's group-stage matches. He started against Mexico and the Czech Republic, then came on as a substitute in a 1-0 win over South Korea that sent Bafana Bafana into the knockout phase. He did not play in the last-16 defeat to Canada, when South Africa lost 1-0. Two weeks before the tournament, Adams lost his grandmother, but he remained with the squad and played through the group stage.
Locker-room footage and depression reports
A video circulating on social media, reportedly from the dressing room after the win over South Korea, shows team-mates celebrating while Adams sits alone without joining in. Local media, including SKAI, have reported that the player had been dealing with depression and that the death is being treated as a possible suicide. No official cause has been given by the family or the authorities, and the South African Football Association (SAFA) has not yet issued a statement.
A career cut short
Adams earned his first senior cap in 2023 and made nine appearances for his country. At club level, he helped Mamelodi Sundowns win the league title in the 2025-26 season. His mentor, Bredin Johnson, confirmed the death in an interview with Soccer Laduma, saying Adams had come back from the World Cup full of ambition for the next chapter of his career. Neither Sundowns nor SAFA has released a public comment on the loss, leaving the football community in South Africa to absorb the shock of a young international's sudden death.
