Death confirmed

Joaquim Letria, a Portuguese journalist and writer, died on Friday, 16 October 2026, aged 82. Observador first reported the death, citing close sources, and SIC Notícias also reported it. Editora Âncora confirmed the news to Expresso but gave no details about the circumstances of his death. A family source told Lusa that he died at his home and had been weakened for some time, though he was not ill.

Early career in print and abroad

Born in Lisbon on 8 November 1943, Letria began his career at the Diário de Lisboa. The start year varies across reports: 1963 in most, 1962 in PÚBLICO and 1961 in another account. He later worked for the magazine Flama and Rádio Clube Português, then reported for the Associated Press and was a correspondent for Deutsche-Presse Agentur until 1970. He subsequently moved to London to work at the BBC, as a programme assistant according to PÚBLICO.

Return to RTP and the press

After the 25 April 1974 revolution he returned to Portugal to join RTP, where reports describe his post variously as deputy director of information for non-daily programmes and as director of information. Most outlets say he received the Press Prize in television in 1974, while one account dates a Prémio Bordalo as a "Figura da TV" to 1977. He created the programmes Directíssimo and Tal & Qual, which mixed news with entertainment, and the segment Apanhados appeared in 1979. After the Democratic Alliance won the 1980 election he was removed from RTP, returning to the station in the 1990s according to a Porto Editora biography cited by RTP.

He co-founded the weeklies O Jornal and Tal & Qual and was the first director of the magazines Sábado and Tempo Livre, according to PÚBLICO. He also belonged to the founding team of Expresso. Reports note that he was elected president of the Sindicato dos Jornalistas.

Spokesman, teaching and a 2011 compensation

Letria was spokesman for President Ramalho Eanes until 1986. From 1987 he taught as a guest professor and assistant at several institutions, including the Escola Superior de Jornalismo in Porto, the Universidade Independente, the Universidade Autónoma de Lisboa and ISCIA in Aveiro. In 2011 the Portuguese state paid him compensation after the European Court of Human Rights found that his freedom of expression had been violated. He had been convicted of aggravated defamation for calling former Castelo de Paiva mayor Antero Gaspar a liar in a column about the collapse of the Entre-os-Rios bridge, and the court said such a conviction could discourage media from promoting public debate.

Tributes

Culture Minister Margarida Balseiro Lopes lamented his death in a post on her official account on X. She described him as a multifaceted communications professional, founder of several editorial projects and author of several books. The statement came on the day of his death. She added:

“The country is losing one of the most striking figures of post-25 April journalism.”
