Reaction to the commission verdict

Jurgen Klopp addressed the independent commission verdict against Manchester City during a news conference in Munich on Wednesday. Softening stance on retroactive celebrations

Klopp distanced himself from earlier public comments in which he suggested he would arrange a celebration if Manchester City were stripped of league honours. In January 2025, while working as head of global soccer at Red Bull, Klopp remarked that supporters should book flights to Mallorca, promising to buy beer and hold a title parade in his garden. Speaking ahead of Germany's international match against Serbia in Munich on Thursday, the former Liverpool manager emphasized that his perspective had evolved and that he preferred to stay relaxed rather than demand retrospective recognition.

“I know I once said something that I'd come if there was ever a parade, but it doesn't feel like that now. I don't feel like I need to have my bus parade. I can wait and stay totally relaxed.”

Klopp noted that the legal proceedings had already dragged on for years and observed that subsequent appeals and procedural complications would likely mean the case continues for an extended period.

Respect for Guardiola and title rivalries

During his nine-year managerial tenure at Anfield before stepping down in 2024, Klopp guided Liverpool to both the Premier League and UEFA Champions League trophies. His Liverpool side won the Premier League title in the 2019-20 season and finished as runners-up to Pep Guardiola's Manchester City by a single point in both 2018-19 and 2021-22. Guardiola managed Manchester City from 2016 until leaving the English club in summer 2026, creating a domestic rivalry characterized by high point tallies. Klopp explained that his deep professional respect for Guardiola and the quality of football Manchester City displayed on the pitch precluded him from commenting negatively on the verdict.

“My respect for Pep Guardiola and the football that City played in the time when we played against each other, what they played on the field, the opponents they were at the top level, is much too high for me to say anything now.”

Klopp stressed that any disciplinary sanctions ultimately imposed on Manchester City have nothing to do with him and that he remains fully satisfied with the sporting achievements of his Liverpool teams. Rather than speculating on possible penalties or altered league tables, the German coach expressed a preference to let the regulatory process conclude on its own.
