The 1937 Civil War narrative follows Republican prisoner Rafael Rodríguez Rapún (Miguel Bernardeau), who was Lorca's real-life partner and theater secretary in La Barraca, and his interaction with a Nationalist soldier (Guitarricadelafuente). The contemporary 2017 thread follows a playwright (Carlos González) uncovering lost writings while investigating his grandfather's past despite opposition from his mother (Lola Dueñas).

Festival run and awards campaign strategy

La bola negra entered the international festival circuit in May 2026 at the Cannes Film Festival, where Calvo and Ambrossi received the Best Director award before Netflix acquired distribution rights. The Spanish Film Academy selected the film in September 2026 to represent Spain in the Best International Feature category for the 2027 Academy Awards.
