Strongest box office year for Spanish cinema in a decade

The commercial run of La bola negra follows a broader upward trend across the Spanish film market in 2026. Cumulative ticket sales for domestic productions surpassed €83 million by late September, exceeding the full-year totals recorded in 2022, 2023, 2024, and 2025 with three months remaining in the calendar year. Comscore Movies data indicated that attendance had risen 40% and box office revenue had climbed 47% by the end of August compared to the previous year. Industry forecasts project that La bola negra will reach a final gross between €20 million and €30 million in Spain. If the film exceeds €25 million alongside Torrente, presidente (which has generated over €28 million as the fourth highest-grossing Spanish production in history), 2026 will mark the first year in Spanish cinema history with two domestic titles passing that benchmark, surpassing the previous record set in 2001 when The Others earned €27 million and Torrente 2 took €22 million.

Awards path and international distribution

The box office figures follow critical recognition on the international festival circuit. The production earned a shared Best Director award at the Cannes Film Festival, alongside the Audience Award at the San Sebastián International Film Festival and the People's Choice Award at the Toronto International Film Festival, where it was the first non-English title to win since 2011. The screenplay connects three stories across distinct chapters of modern Spanish history: 1932 during the Second Republic, 1937 during the Spanish Civil War, and 2017. The narrative draws from Alberto Conejero's play La piedra oscura, which engages with the unfinished work Federico García Lorca left prior to his assassination in August 1936. Co-produced by Movistar Plus+, Suma Content, Le Pacte, and Pedro and Agustín Almodóvar's El Deseo, the production grew out of creative exchanges between the directors and Almodóvar following their 2025 documentary project Pedro x Javis.

In an interview with Fotogramas, Javier Ambrossi recalled a discussion at Almodóvar's home that helped define the central concept of desire in the script.

“We were at his house eating his sisters' croquettes and I told him that I did not get along well with desire. He replied: 'Well, you have to do it, eh?' And I thought: 'Fuck, it's true. I have to desire.' And that is where this thing seen in the movie came together, of desiring someone in that way where you cannot even breathe, that consumes your body.”

International promotion for the film included appearances in the United States, where actor Carlos González joined co-stars Penélope Cruz and Glenn Close at industry events ahead of the autumn release.
