The collapse

Lech Poznań entered the home leg with a 4-1 cushion from the first match in Denmark, but AGF Aarhus dismantled that advantage inside 90 minutes. Tobias Bech opened the scoring in the 32nd minute, Kristian Arnstad added a second in the 54th, and Frederik Tingager made it 0-3 in the 75th, levelling the tie on aggregate. Over 36,000 fans at Stadion Poznań, including more than 2,000 travelling Danes, watched the Polish champions unravel. Filip Jagiełło briefly restored hope with a goal in the 95th minute, but Tomas Kristjansson equalised for Aarhus five minutes later, forcing a penalty shootout. There, misses by Sayyadmanesh and Kozubal handed the Danish side a 4-3 win and a place in the third qualifying round.

Coach Frederiksen's devastation

Niels Frederiksen did not hide the scale of the setback. The 55-year-old, who has spent more than three decades in coaching, faced the media with raw honesty.

He said his team lacked the quality with the ball that had been so effective in the first leg, and that Aarhus converted their chances with clinical efficiency. Frederiksen stressed that the opponent was one of the toughest Lech could have drawn in the entire Champions League qualifying path. He told reporters the pain was enormous and that the squad must now channel the disappointment into sporting anger for the next league fixture.

Danish media celebrate a miracle

Across Denmark, the comeback was framed as something close to impossible. The Ritzau news agency called it a genuine miracle, while daily BT wrote that "chłopcy z AGF zrobili coś naprawdę niemożliwego" (the boys from AGF did something truly impossible). Public broadcaster DR described a fabulous return that entered Danish football history, and TV2 said AGF had performed a miracle. Tipsbladet noted the collective performance and the emergence of young players, suggesting a generational shift that bodes well for the club's future.

Minute of silence controversy

The evening carried an additional layer of regret. Jarosław Jechorek, a basketball legend of Lech Poznań who won four Polish championships and two Polish Cups with the club's now-defunct section, died at 65 after a long illness. No minute of silence was observed before kick-off. Maciej Henszel, the club's communications manager, explained that UEFA rules require such tributes to be requested by the morning of match day, and the news of Jechorek's death arrived too late. Henszel confirmed that a tribute will be held at the next home match, against KI Klaksvik on 6 August.

What's next

Lech's Champions League campaign is over before August. The team drops into the Europa League third qualifying round, where they will face KI Klaksvik of the Faroe Islands, with the first leg at home on 6 August and the return a week later. Frederiksen said the squad still has ambitions and that reaching the Europa League group stage would represent progress compared to the previous season. The immediate task is a domestic league match on Saturday, where the coach expects a reaction.
