Cucurella joins Real Madrid from Chelsea on day of Spain’s World Cup opener
The Spanish left-back completed a €60 million move from Chelsea on Monday morning, hours before he is set to start for Spain against Cape Verde in Atlanta.
A rapid deal sealed by Mourinho’s call
Real Madrid moved quickly for Marc Cucurella, sealing the transfer inside 48 hours. On Friday Jose Mourinho, just appointed as head coach, phoned the 27-year-old at Spain’s World Cup camp.
The conversation gave Cucurella the sense of importance he had been missing in other suitors’ approaches, according to Spanish reports. By Sunday evening a fee of €55 million fixed plus €5 million in variables had been agreed. The contract runs for six seasons, until 30 June 2032.I want you in it. It’s you or nobody.

Cucurella’s profile and World Cup timing
The defender arrives from Chelsea, where he spent four seasons after a €65 million move from Brighton in 2022. A Euro 2024 winner with 24 caps, Cucurella is part of Luis de la Fuente’s squad at the 2026 World Cup in North America. His debut for his new club will have to wait; first he lines up against Cape Verde in Spain’s opening group match in Atlanta later on Monday. Cucurella played 163 games for Chelsea, scoring nine goals and providing 13 assists, and lifted the Club World Cup and the Conference League.
Family celebrates the move
Claudia Rodríguez, Cucurella’s partner and mother of their three children, posted a childhood photograph of herself wearing a Real Madrid shirt on social media.
The fashion designer and influencer also thanked Chelsea, saying she arrived with two babies and is leaving with two small children and a British-born daughter, struggling to explain that the club is no longer part of their lives.I’m bursting with happiness and pride, let the adventure begin.
Chelsea’s financial pressures and the bigger picture
Chelsea missed European qualification for next season and is under tighter UEFA financial scrutiny after significant losses. The London club was willing to let the left-back go even though his contract ran to 2028. Real Madrid paid a price close to what Chelsea invested in 2022.
Everyone at Chelsea would like to thank Marc for his efforts during his time at the club and for the role he played in recent successes.
Enzo Fernandez: the next domino?
Cucurella’s exit has fuelled talk that his former Chelsea team-mate Enzo Fernandez could follow. BBC Sport reports that Fernandez is keen to join Madrid and that club president Florentino Pérez has hinted at a €150 million signing after an identical bid for Atlético’s Julian Alvarez was rejected. Chelsea value the Argentina midfielder at £120 million and, under new manager Xabi Alonso, would be content to keep him. Manchester City and Paris Saint-Germain have distanced themselves, leaving Madrid as the only realistic destination — if a fee can be agreed.
