Social media statement on the anniversary

On Wednesday morning, New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani released a 211-word statement to mark the three-year anniversary of the October 7, 2023 attacks by Hamas against Israel. Mamdani, who took office in January as the city's first Muslim mayor, described the anniversary as profoundly painful for many New Yorkers and condemned the Hamas assault as a horrific war crime that killed over 1,100 Israelis and saw 251 taken hostage. The majority of the text, however, focused on Israeli military operations in Gaza, characterizing them as an ongoing genocide that has killed more than 74,000 Palestinians, including over 21,000 children. Mamdani wrote that more than 1,400 Palestinians were killed after a ceasefire, and pointed to Israeli strikes on ambulances, residential structures, and blocked humanitarian shipments. He also argued that federal tax dollars fund these actions through military supplies, urging opposition to occupation and apartheid.

Backlash from Jewish organizations and Israeli officials

The mayor's post prompted direct condemnation from Israeli diplomats and Jewish community representatives across New York, a city where Jewish residents make up 12% of the population. Israeli Ambassador to the United Nations Danny Danon argued that the mayor diverted attention away from the victims of the attack, drawing a comparison to discussing al-Qaeda alongside victims on September 11. Jonathan Greenblatt, chief executive of the Anti-Defamation League, noted that the text omitted any mention of the word Jews while politicizing a day of mourning. Rabbi Ammiel Hirsch, president of the New York Board of Rabbis, described the statement as deeply hurtful to the Jewish community.

“It is so offensive to so many Jews that it is hard to describe how offensive it is.”

Mark Treyger, chief executive of the Jewish Community Relations Council, also voiced frustration over the tone of the administration's message.

“This is a moment when people are looking to see if we have the kind of leadership that brings people together, lowers the temperature and makes everyone feel respected. And today was just not it.”

Union Square vigil and street confrontation

Mamdani declined an invitation from Israel's consul general in New York to view a 47-minute screening of attack footage, opting instead to attend an evening vigil in Union Square organized by the advocacy group Israelis for Peace. Progressively aligned officials, including Public Advocate Jumaane Williams and former Comptroller Brad Lander, also attended the event to show solidarity with victims of the violence. The gathering encountered disruption when hundreds of pro-Palestinian demonstrators arrived, chanting slogans that included "Gaza will be free" while denouncing the officials present. Protesters heckled Mamdani directly, shouting terms like "traitor," "coward," and "sellout," citing his outreach to Jewish organizations and past meetings with President Donald Trump. Williams defended his presence at the gathering by arguing against demands to acknowledge only one side of the suffering.

“I am trying to make sure that I give voice to everybody's pain. I think too often people try to force people to pick. I am not picking. There is a lot of pain. There is a lot of death. There are a lot of innocent people who lost their lives.”

Exit under security escort

Speakers on the stage in Union Square referenced ongoing dangers in Rafah and thanked the organizers for holding weekly rallies supporting civilian lives on both sides. The disruption prevented Mamdani from addressing the assembly, leaving him standing silently among security personnel as chants continued. At 8:50 p.m., the mayor departed the square flanked by protective officers and entered a waiting vehicle. In contrast to Mamdani's stance, New York Governor Kathy Hochul issued a statement commemorating October 7 as the deadliest day for the Jewish people since the Holocaust, while the New York City Council shared the account of an Israeli Jew protected by a Bedouin Muslim farmer during the assault.
