Giorgia Meloni and Karol Nawrocki reaffirm ties as Italian cabinet sets tenure record

Exchange of statements on social media

Italian Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni published an official message on the social media platform X on Saturday, 5 September 2026, directly addressing Polish President Karol Nawrocki. The statement answered a congratulatory message that Nawrocki posted on Friday, 4 September 2026, following the Italian executive reaching the longest continuous tenure in the history of the Italian Republic. Nawrocki praised Meloni for her leadership and noted the sustained support she has received from Italian voters during her time in office. He outlined his view of the bilateral relationship in his post.

“This achievement demonstrates not only her dedication and leadership abilities, but above all the lasting trust that Italians place in her. Poland, and I personally, highly value our close friendship with Italy. I look forward to continuing our strong cooperation, based on shared values and a shared vision of a safe and prosperous Europe.”

Meloni expressed gratitude for the message from Warsaw, framing the relationship between the two governments as a close partnership. She pointed to their common perspective on citizen protection and the future direction of the European continent. Meloni stated her position on bilateral ties in her reply on Saturday.

“Dear Karol Nawrocki, thank you very much for the congratulations and the friendship that unites us. We both believe in the importance of the security of our citizens and in a strong Europe based on its values. I am convinced that Italy and Poland will continue to strengthen their ties and cooperate with each other in Europe and on the main arenas of international politics.”

Italian government surpasses tenure benchmark

The exchange between the two leaders followed a milestone in Italian political history recorded on Friday, 4 September 2026. Meloni, who took office as Italy's first female prime minister, saw her cabinet become the longest continuously serving government in the history of the Italian Republic. Her administration surpassed the previous longevity record held by the second government of Silvio Berlusconi, which governed Italy between 2001 and 2005.

Reports provided slightly different tallies for the exact number of days in power at the time of the milestone, with one account noting 1,413 days and another measuring 1,414 days in office. According to the latter count, Meloni's administration surpassed the tenure of Berlusconi's second cabinet by exactly one day on Friday. The benchmark reflects an uninterrupted period of governance by the executive team since taking the oath of office in Rome.

Coalition makeup and diplomatic alignment

The government led by Meloni was sworn into office on 22 October 2022 following the Italian general election. The administration is built upon a centre-right coalition comprising three political parties: Brothers of Italy, Forza Italia under Deputy Prime Minister Antonio Tajani, and the League under Matteo Salvini. This coalition structure has remained in place throughout the governing term, maintaining executive continuity across its mandate.

The statements exchanged between Rome and Warsaw emphasized sustained bilateral alignment across several policy domains. Both Meloni and Nawrocki identified citizen security, the preservation of European values, and coordinated action in international political forums as central priorities for ongoing Polish-Italian cooperation. Meloni confirmed that the Italian government intends to work closely with Poland within European structures and on key multilateral stages going forward.
