Interception near Kaunas

Italian NATO fighter jets operating from the Šiauliai air base in central Lithuania scrambled shortly after midnight on Tuesday, 15 September 2026, to intercept an unidentified aerial target. Lithuanian radar installations detected the unmanned aircraft crossing the national border from the direction of Belarus. The quick-reaction interceptor tracked the vehicle and engaged it over rural terrain near the village of Pratkūnai, east of Kaunas and near the Kruonis pumped-storage hydroelectric power plant. Officials from Lithuania's National Crisis Management Centre reported that the interception caused no casualties among local residents and resulted in no infrastructural damage. Teams of police officers and military gendarmerie personnel were dispatched directly to the impact area to secure the perimeter and examine the wreckage.

Explosive payload and alerts

Lithuanian Defense Minister Robertas Kaunas confirmed in an official statement that sappers discovered an active explosive charge on the downed aircraft and neutralized the hazard at the site. Technical experts are carrying out further forensic examinations on the recovered components to determine the exact drone model and flight configuration. The detection of the incoming craft had earlier prompted regional air threat alerts across the districts of Vilnius, Trakai, and Kaunas. The event marks the first instance of an unmanned aircraft being shot down inside Lithuanian territory since the beginning of Russia's full-scale invasion of Ukraine in 2022.

Lithuanian President Gitanas Nausėda commended the NATO aircrews for their rapid intervention following the airspace violation.

“As Russia intensifies its aggression against Ukraine, such readiness is crucial for our region. Together with our allies, Lithuania will defend its airspace.”

Baltic air policing operations

NATO has maintained the Baltic Air Policing mission to safeguard the skies over Estonia, Latvia, and Lithuania continuously since the three Baltic states joined the alliance in 2004. Similar aerial incursions have occurred elsewhere along NATO's eastern flank earlier in 2026. Allied fighter aircraft shot down stray Ukrainian long-range strike drones over Estonia in May, followed by two separate interceptions over Latvia in June and August. Officials in Kyiv previously stated that Russian electronic warfare systems regularly jam satellite and navigational signals, causing long-range strike drones targeting sites in Russia to veer off course and enter alliance territory.

Bilateral coordination with Poland and Italy

Following the overnight engagement, Minister Kaunas spoke directly with Italian Defense Minister Guido Crosetto, who expressed Italy's continued commitment to the collective defense of the Baltic region.

“Joint actions of NATO countries and all services bring the right results and help ensure our security.”

Minister Kaunas also established contact with Polish Minister of National Defense Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz to coordinate actions and mobilize investigative resources following multiple drone incidents in the border region. Kosiniak-Kamysz confirmed that Polish military personnel recovered an unmanned aerial vehicle on Monday, 14 September. Flight trajectory data indicates that the drone found in Poland had previously crossed Lithuanian territory on Sunday, 13 September, where local forces attempted neutralization, before transiting the border into Russia's Kaliningrad exclave and operating over the Baltic Sea. Polish armed forces also scrambled combat aircraft overnight into Tuesday amid attacks on Ukraine, while the Government Centre for Security issued mobile phone warnings to residents in the Lubelskie and Podkarpackie voivodeships before lifting the alert before 04:00.
