Theatrical plans for animated sequel

Netflix is planning an extended theatrical release for the sequel to its animated hit KPop Demon Hunters. Co-CEO Ted Sarandos outlined the distribution approach during the Bloomberg Screentime conference in Los Angeles. The original movie, produced by Sony Pictures Animation and directed by Maggie Kang and Chris Appelhans, tells the story of K-pop singers who use music to protect the world from demons. Sarandos described the company's objective in balancing theatrical interest with platform accessibility.

“What we're doing is looking at this model and saying, 'Okay, how do we serve movie lovers who may want to see this movie in a theater,' and 'How do we not harm value to Netflix?'”

The animated feature accumulated 325.1 million unique views in its first 91 days, ranking as the most-watched film in the history of the streaming platform. That total places the title well ahead of action comedy Red Notice, which holds second place with 230.9 million views, followed by Carry-On at 172.1 million and Don't Look Up at 171.4 million. In March 2026, the film received the Academy Award for Best Animated Feature, winning over theatrical release Zootropolis 2, which had grossed more than $1.87 billion worldwide.

The distribution plan for KPop Demon Hunters 2 is part of a broader schedule of cinema releases for upcoming Netflix projects. Netflix has scheduled broad theatrical releases in 2027 for Greta Gerwig's Narnia: The Magician's Nephew and the animated film Charlie vs. the Chocolate Factory, while KPop Demon Hunters 2 is expected to arrive around 2029 with Kang and Appelhans returning.

Sarandos explained how early cinema exposure affects the streaming audience that follows.

“The most passionate audience went to see it in the theater, so by the time it comes to Netflix, you've lost that passionate audience, and you got the people that go, 'Oh, I meant to see that,' or 'I'll get around to that.'”
