20-year-old German held for murder after fatal knife attack in Regensburg bank

The attack

On Thursday, 23 July 2026, at around 14:50, a 20-year-old German man entered a Hypovereinsbank (HVB) branch in Regensburg's western district. He handed a note to an employee at reception with the words "Bankraub" and "Überfall" (bank robbery and hold-up). He then raised a kitchen knife with a 12-centimetre blade, walked past the counter, and stabbed the employee multiple times. The branch was cashless, so no money could be handed over. After the attack, the suspect retreated to the rear of the branch, while other staff and customers, including a couple with a baby, moved the victim to another room and gave first aid. Police, who arrived shortly after, had only visual contact with the victim for some time before they could extract him through a window.

Prior police contact

Less than 24 hours before the killing, the suspect had voluntarily gone to a police station to turn himself in, saying he had thrown a beer bottle onto police premises. Police operations leader Erwin Frankl said there were no grounds for detention, and the man was released. The suspect had a history of minor offences and had been reported missing several times after failing to return to a youth welfare facility. A weapons possession ban had been imposed after he was previously found carrying a knife and a stun gun.

Victim and witnesses

The victim, a bank employee, was a random target, according to Kriminalpolizei officer Robert Fuchs. The couple with the baby were customers and were unharmed. Police initially feared a hostage situation because other people were still in the building. Officers rescued the two other employees and the victim through a window. The victim was taken to hospital but died shortly afterwards.

The motive is still relatively unclear.

Investigation and charges

Special forces arrested the suspect about three hours after the attack. He was brought before a magistrate on Friday, 24 July, and placed in pre-trial detention on suspicion of murder and severe extortionate robbery. Prosecutor Thomas Schug said there were currently no indications of diminished responsibility, though the suspect is being examined. No drugs were found on him. The investigation is ongoing, with police saying it will take time to verify the exact sequence of events.
