In brief
On 14 October the PD abstained on the M5s and AVS documents, and they abstained on the PD's, instead of opposing one another as in the past.
The PD favours arms shipments to Ukraine while M5s and AVS oppose them, which has so far blocked a joint progressive resolution.
On 14 October the progressive alliance did not openly clash over Ukraine in the Chamber, a first according to ANSA. The parties filed different resolutions, but none rejected another's position as had happened in the past. The Partito Democratico (PD) abstained on the documents from M5s and AVS, and they abstained on the PD's. Elly Schlein called it a step forward and credited the unitary work and discussions among the parties.
On 15 October, at a pre-summit meeting of the Party of European Socialists in Brussels, Schlein said differences remain on how to support Ukraine while pursuing a truce and a negotiating table for a just peace. She said the parties are discussing those differences and expressed confidence they would reach an agreement. She also pointed to divisions inside the governing majority, saying Matteo Salvini had said things very different from Giorgia Meloni on Ukraine the day before. Asked about the idea of Antonio Costa as the EU's single negotiator, she said Europe should name one voice for its 27 member states and that she hoped the Council would address the issue.
