The stabbing
Francesco Spataro, 53, was killed with a knife inside an apartment on via Sampolo 486 in Palermo on the morning of Sunday, 5 July 2026. The attack occurred at the end of a heated argument that, according to initial reports, stemmed from trivial motives and likely a condominium dispute. Spataro shared the rented second-floor flat with two other men. One of them was out shopping at the time of the killing, while the other, 38-year-old Francesco Cusumano, remained inside.
Gas leak and evacuation
When firefighters arrived at the scene, they detected a strong gas leak coming from the apartment where Cusumano had barricaded himself. Fearing an explosion, they ordered the immediate evacuation of the entire building. Residents, including tourists staying at a bed and breakfast inside the structure, were rushed out. The gas supply to the building was shut off in an emergency procedure, and technicians from Amg Energia later sealed the main gas column to prevent any accidental reopening.
