Small plane strikes house in Ganderkesee, Germany: one dead, search on for second occupant
A single-engine Tecnam aircraft departing Bremen lost altitude and plunged into a residential roof in Ganderkesee around 11 a.m. on Saturday. At least one person aboard died; emergency crews are using drones to locate a possible second occupant.
Crash sequence
On Saturday, 25 July 2026, shortly after 11:00, a single-engine Tecnam light aircraft took off from Bremen. Within minutes, for reasons that remain unknown, the plane lost altitude and struck the roof of a single-family house in Ganderkesee, roughly 15 km west of Bremen. The aircraft was a four-seat model with a wingspan of about 10.5 metres and an overall length of 7.5 metres, manufactured by the Italian company Tecnam. The force of the impact embedded the machine in the attic of the building.
Police in Delmenhorst confirmed that at least one person aboard died at the scene. The identity of the victim has not been established: it could be the pilot or a passenger. A police spokesperson told NDR Niedersachsen that a second person was also believed to have been on board, and a search for that individual continued through the afternoon.
Rescue and recovery effort
The recovery operation was described as extremely difficult and lasted several hours. Firefighters and other emergency units used a turntable ladder to access the roof, while drones were deployed to search for the missing occupant. The body of the first victim was eventually recovered from the wreck, but the condition of the aircraft hampered the work.
Authorities have not yet determined what caused the crash. Aviation safety experts are examining both the technical state of the machine and the meteorological conditions at the time of the accident. No official statement on a possible cause has been issued.
No injuries on the ground
The family that lived in the house was not at home when the plane struck, allowing them to escape harm. Police said there were no other injuries on the ground. The incident posed no danger to the wider public.
Precautionary measures and support
As a precaution, all residents within a 100-metre radius were evacuated from their homes. The electricity supply to the street was also temporarily disconnected for safety reasons. A crisis intervention team was set up to assist witnesses and people in the immediate vicinity of the crash site.
An information point was established for locals affected by the event. Police and fire services remained at the scene with substantial resources well into the afternoon.
