Two decades of F-16 operations
The Polish Air Force marked the 20th anniversary of operating F-16 fighters on 2 October 2026 at the 31st Tactical Air Base in Poznań-Krzesiny. The event coincided with the annual holiday of the 2nd Tactical Aviation Wing and featured commemorative awards, military orchestra performances, and a retrospective conference. Poland ordered 48 Block 52+ aircraft in April 2003 under a financing package backed by United States government credit, securing 36 single-seat F-16C and 12 two-seat F-16D jets. The first two aircraft landed at Krzesiny on 8 November 2006, followed by two more the next day. Poland currently maintains 47 active F-16 aircraft stationed across bases in Poznań-Krzesiny and Łask. In a letter read at the ceremony, Defence Minister Władysław Kosiniak-Kamysz evaluated the fleet's impact:
“The entry into service of multirole F-16 aircraft meant a profound technological and organizational transformation for the Polish Air Force. It was not only about purchasing modern equipment, but above all about implementing modern training standards, logistics, and tactical procedures.”
Fleet modernization and next-generation transitions
Military leadership confirmed that the F-16 will remain central to Poland's air defense for at least two more decades. Air Force Inspector Major General Tomasz Jatczak announced that a comprehensive Mid-Life Upgrade program focusing on onboard radar systems and avionics will begin in 2029. The modernization will occur in stages to preserve training schedules and operational alert readiness. Concurrently, Poland is introducing 32 fifth-generation F-35 fighters, with initial aircraft already flying domestically and final deliveries planned by 2029. Commander of the 2nd Tactical Aviation Wing Brigadier General Norbert Chojnacki noted that the F-16 established Polish interoperability within NATO defense structures.
“This aircraft still has large service-life reserves and strong modernization potential. We are starting a thorough Mid-Life Upgrade in the near future, so many years of service and work still lie ahead for the F-16 and the people who fly and maintain it.”
South Korean FA-50 jets assume combat readiness
In a separate announcement on 2 October 2026, Defence Minister Kosiniak-Kamysz stated on social media that South Korean FA-50GF light combat aircraft entered active combat duty to strengthen the eastern border. Poland ordered 48 FA-50 aircraft from Korea Aerospace Industries in July 2022 alongside K2 tanks, K9 howitzers, and Homar-K rocket systems. The first 12 FA-50GF aircraft arrived in July 2023 at the air base in Mińsk Mazowiecki, replacing MiG-29 fighters transferred to Ukraine. An additional 36 FA-50PL aircraft are scheduled for delivery between 2025 and 2028. Although acquired without weapons, the defence ministry procured the required armaments, allowing the aircraft to carry out live border defense missions.

Pilot training and operational history
Poland's conversion to Western fighters began in May and June 2005, when 49 Polish pilots started training with the 560th Flying Training Squadron in San Antonio. The symbolic handover of the first jets took place in Fort Worth, Texas, on 15 September 2006, before airframes 4040 and 4041 underwent testing at Edwards Air Force Base through September 2007. Colonel Rościsław Stepaniuk, the first Polish pilot qualified on the F-16, flew one of the initial aircraft to Krzesiny on 9 November 2006. Subsequent ferry flights continued through November 2007, when Major Cezary Wiśniewski delivered airframe 4085. Reflecting on the transition from Soviet-era aircraft, Stepaniuk recalled the operational shift for aircrews:
“The MiG-21 from which I originated had very many limitations. The F-16 essentially had no limitations. The only, largest limitation was the pilot. But if they were well-trained and could extract from this aircraft the maximum of what it was built for, what remained was immense joy.”
