The Copenhagen walkout and Norway fixture

Cristiano Ronaldo published a multi-page statement detailing the events that led him to leave Portugal's Nations League training camp in Copenhagen ahead of their match against Denmark. The 41-year-old forward explained that head coach Jorge Jesus had initially agreed to a fitness plan that would see Ronaldo rested for both the Norway and Denmark fixtures. That arrangement changed on the day of the Norway match, when Jesus informed the forward that he would play for 30 minutes. Ronaldo warmed up continuously from halftime onward, but the technical staff never brought him onto the pitch during the match.

“Everyone knows the rest. I warmed up from halftime onwards, watched the minutes tick by and wasn't called on.”

The eight-point script and press conference

Following the match, Ronaldo held a meeting with Jesus in the presence of Al Nassr sporting director Simão Coutinho to resolve the situation. Ronaldo stated that the discussion resulted in an eight-point outline intended to guide the coach's upcoming press conference. The document stated that Ronaldo had never demanded playing time, had respected Jesus' tactical decisions, and that warming him up without playing was an error. According to Ronaldo, the notes did not require an apology from Jesus, but the coach's subsequent public briefing contradicted the agreed talking points, prompting Ronaldo to leave the squad immediately.

Disciplinary assessment and squad availability

In his statement, Ronaldo apologized to his teammates and Portuguese supporters for leaving the camp and for not greeting the crowd after the Norway match. He stated that his responsibilities as team captain made his conduct more serious, adding that he expects the Portuguese Football Federation to assess the incident and issue a formal sanction. Ronaldo insisted he is not following Lionel Messi into international retirement, stating that he will return to the squad once any suspension is served. He affirmed that his availability remains open for competitive fixtures rather than being restricted to a ceremonial farewell appearance.

“Therefore, if I am physically fit, playing for my club, hopefully scoring goals, then after serving whatever suspension is imposed on me, I will be available, as I have always been until today, to compete and win for our national team.”

Coach response and public reactions

Jesus had previously denied making any agreement with Ronaldo following the win against Norway, though he maintained that the forward could return in the future. On Tuesday night in Leiria, after attending a match involving Portugal's under-21 team, Jesus told reporters from CMTV that he had not yet read the newly published statement and declined to comment further. The dispute drew immediate public commentary across international media. Broadcaster Piers Morgan and El Chiringuito journalist Edu Aguirre defended Ronaldo, with Aguirre stating the forward had faced multiple betrayals from the coaching staff. Conversely, Portuguese commentator Ana Garcia Martins criticized the attempt to dictate the coach's press conference through a pre-approved script, suggesting Ronaldo should step away from the national team.
