First public appearances in London

Prince Harry attended two public events in London on Thursday, marking his first formal outings since returning to the United Kingdom from California. The 42-year-old royal attended the inaugural Invictus Spirit Awards held at the Old Royal Naval College in Greenwich. Wearing a tuxedo decorated with military medals, he met wounded veterans, posed for photographs, and took selfies with attendees. Harry founded the Invictus Games in 2014 as an international sports competition for injured and sick service personnel. Meghan did not attend the evening gala with him.

When asked about his return to Britain, Harry reflected on his arrival.

“It feels good to be back on British soil.”

Earlier on Thursday, Harry spoke at a conference dedicated to improving medical care for children wounded in armed conflicts. The gathering was organized jointly by the charity Save the Children and Imperial College London. Harry greeted guests and spent time with award winners, competitors, and supporters before the Greenwich ceremony began.

Relocation and royal standing

The public appearances follow the family's relocation from the United States to the United Kingdom on 26 August 2026. Harry and Meghan stepped back from royal duties in early 2020 and lived in California for six years before returning with their children, seven-year-old Prince Archie and five-year-old Princess Lilibet. The move surprised close family members, and British media reports indicate that the couple has settled in the Cotswolds. Prior to Thursday's charity appearances, Harry's only known activity in Britain was a visit to a London podcast studio on 7 September 2026.

Despite their return to the country, King Charles III clarified through Buckingham Palace that Harry and Meghan will continue strictly as private citizens. The palace stated that the couple will not carry out official duties, receive funding from the public purse, or have access to round-the-clock police bodyguards. In addition, the couple will not use their Royal Highness styles, and their charitable work remains personal.

Palace response to Spencer memoir

The London appearances coincided with public controversy surrounding an upcoming memoir by Charles Spencer, the brother of the late Princess Diana. The book, titled Swan Song: Diana, My Sister, is being serialized in the Daily Mail ahead of its release on Tuesday. In published extracts, Spencer claimed that Charles seemed euphoric during a telephone conversation following Diana's death in a car crash and remarked that she would be forgotten soon enough. Spencer also claimed Charles sounded like a lottery winner.

Buckingham Palace issued a statement on Wednesday evening firmly denying the allegations in the book. The palace stated that the 77-year-old monarch is aware that the pain of losing a sibling can cloud reason, affect judgment, and alter memories. King Charles spent Thursday in London hosting a conference for artificial intelligence leaders.
