Two aerial targets near Romania's border trigger back-to-back RO-Alert warnings in Tulcea
Radar picked up the first target at 09:30 and a second at 15:09 on 2 August 2026; the afternoon incident scrambled two F-16 fighter jets from Borcea air base.
First alert of the day
At around 09:30 on 2 August, the Romanian Ministry of National Defence's radar surveillance system detected an aerial target near the river border with Ukraine. The National Military Command Centre immediately notified the General Inspectorate for Emergency Situations, which issued a RO-Alert message to residents of Tulcea county. The target remained outside Romanian airspace and disappeared from radar shortly after detection.
The target evolved in proximity to the river border with Ukraine, without entering national airspace. The air alert ceased at 09:52.
The all-clear was given less than half an hour after the initial warning, and no military aircraft were scrambled.
Second alert and fighter response
A second radar contact occurred at 15:09 the same day, again close to the fluvial frontier. This time the response was more robust: two F-16 jets from the Romanian Air Force's 86th Air Base in Borcea were scrambled at 15:17 to monitor the situation. The National Military Command Centre again triggered the alert chain, and a new RO-Alert message was sent to the population in northern Tulcea.
There is a possibility of objects falling from the airspace. Keep calm! Take shelter in basements or civil protection shelters. If no shelter is available, stay inside the house, away from windows and exterior walls. Estimated duration: 90 min.
The Ministry of Defence said it would provide further information as the situation developed. Unlike the morning incident, the second alert did not end quickly; the estimated shelter-in-place period was 90 minutes, and the F-16s remained airborne for monitoring.
Pattern of alerts
Tulcea county, which lies across the Danube from Ukraine's Odesa region, has been under repeated air alerts in recent months. According to the Ministry of Defence, these warnings are triggered by Russian attacks on port infrastructure in southern Ukraine, close to the Romanian border. The debris from drones and missiles intercepted over Ukrainian territory has occasionally fallen on the Romanian side, prompting the RO-Alert system to be activated as a precaution. Saturday's two alerts are the latest in a series that has kept border communities on edge since the intensification of strikes against Danube ports.
