Four-week national temperature outlook

Romania's National Meteorological Administration (ANM) published its four-week weather forecast on 7 September 2026, outlining warmer-than-average conditions across most regions through 5 October 2026. Prepared using European Centre for Medium-Range Weather Forecasts (ECMWF) modeling, the forecast compares projected weekly deviations against multi-year reference averages from 2006 to 2025. During the first week (7 to 14 September), temperatures exceed seasonal norms in western, south-western, central, and mountain areas, while eastern and south-eastern counties remain near seasonal baselines. From 14 September onward, above-average warmth expands across the entire country, with the most pronounced positive anomalies situated in western and south-western Romania.

Early September regional heatwave

Alongside the monthly projection, the agency issued a detailed two-week regional bulletin spanning 7 to 20 September 2026. The initial days of this period bring high late-summer heat to western Romania. In the Banat region, daytime maximum temperatures climb from 28 to 29 degrees Celsius up to 33 to 34 degrees Celsius, producing localized heatwave conditions on 9 and 10 September. Crișana experiences daytime highs between 30 and 33 degrees Celsius, including isolated heatwave conditions on the plains on 9 September, with the Western Plain reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius. In Transylvania and Maramureș, daytime maximums reach approximately 30 degrees Celsius on 9 and 10 September, particularly in western and north-western districts.

Southern and eastern regional patterns

Southern and eastern areas experience elevated daytime temperatures during the same early-week window. In Oltenia, daytime highs range between 30 and 32 degrees Celsius from 8 to 12 September. Muntenia records peak maximums near 31 degrees Celsius between 9 and 11 September, while Moldova records temperatures of approximately 28 degrees Celsius on 9 and 10 September. In Dobrogea, thermal fluctuations remain minor across the fortnight, with coastal daytime maximums stabilizing between 25 and 26 degrees Celsius. Nighttime minimum temperatures also rise during the warm peak, reaching 15 to 16 degrees Celsius in Banat and 14 to 15 degrees Celsius in Crișana during the nights of 10 and 11 September.

Mid-month cooling and precipitation

A distinct cooling trend begins in western counties on 11 September 2026 before extending eastward across the country. Daytime maximums in Banat fall to between 24 and 26 degrees Celsius from 11 to 15 September, before rising to 27 to 28 degrees Celsius by 20 September. Crișana drops to 23 to 25 degrees Celsius, while Transylvania and Maramureș decline to 22 to 24 degrees Celsius. Moldova cools to 22 to 23 degrees Celsius on 12 and 13 September, and Muntenia declines to 25 to 26 degrees Celsius between 12 and 16 September. Showers expand across Banat and Crișana on 11 and 12 September, delivering local accumulations of 10 to 15 liters per square meter, before reaching Transylvania, Moldova, Muntenia, and Oltenia between 12 and 14 September.

Late September precipitation trends

Over the final two weeks of the monthly outlook, precipitation levels balance out across most counties. Between 14 and 21 September, rainfall is forecast to remain slightly deficient in western and north-western Romania while matching typical seasonal totals elsewhere. From 21 to 28 September, precipitation turns slightly surplus locally in south-western areas, with the rest of the country recording normal accumulations. Between 28 September and 5 October, temperatures remain slightly above seasonal averages across most territory, and precipitation totals align closely with long-term September baselines.
