Spanish Royal Family closes Mallorca summer with traditional dinner at Mia restaurant

Felipe VI joined Queen Letizia, their daughters and Queen Sofía for the family's annual dinner at the Mia restaurant in Portixol, after flying back from Colombia and presiding over the Copa del Rey sailing awards.

A tradition resumed

The Spanish Royal Family held its traditional summer dinner at the Mia restaurant in Portixol, Palma de Mallorca, on Saturday 8 August, reviving a custom that could not take place in 2025. Felipe VI, Queen Letizia, Princess Leonor, Infanta Sofía and Queen Sofía gathered at the seafood restaurant run by chef Guillermo Cabot, which specialises in rice dishes, paellas, fideuá and caldereta. The dinner lasted past midnight and marked the effective end of the family's public appearances on the island this summer.

The last time the family dined at Mia was in the summer of 2024, when Princess Irene of Grecia and Princess Tatiana Radziwill, Queen Sofía's sister and cousin respectively, were still present. Irene died in January 2026 and Tatiana in December 2025, losses that kept Queen Sofía in Madrid for much of last summer, when she spent only two days in Palma. This year, the dinner included Jean Henri Fruchaud, Tatiana's widower, whom Queen Sofía invited to Marivent so the two could share company in a place that holds fond memories. It is the first summer Queen Sofía has spent in Mallorca without her sister Irene.

Felipe's compressed Saturday

Felipe VI's day began on a plane returning from Cali, Colombia, where he had attended the inauguration of Abelardo de la Espriella as the country's new president between Thursday and Saturday. After a flight of more than eight hours on a Spanish Air and Space Force plane, he landed in Palma on Saturday afternoon and went directly to the Palacio de la Almudaina to preside over the trophy ceremony for the 44th Copa del Rey Mapfre sailing competition. His boat, Hispania, crewed by the Spanish Navy, finished second in the ORC 0 class, behind the Italian vessel Vudu. The King collected the trophy alongside the Navy crew in a lighthearted moment. From the Almudaina, Felipe went directly to Portixol without stopping at Marivent, joining his family at the restaurant. Letizia, Leonor, Infanta Sofía and Queen Sofía had arrived earlier with Fruchaud.

A family wardrobe in rotation

The dinner produced a notable sartorial detail: Infanta Sofía wore a Desigual dress that Queen Letizia first wore at the 2023 Marivent reception and that Princess Leonor then wore at the same event in 2025. Leonor, for her part, debuted a new open-back dress by the brand Babbaki. Letizia wore a long white dress, consistent with her particular Balearic dress code. Queen Sofía wore a navy blue pantsuit despite the island's high temperatures. Felipe VI wore the Hispania polo and white jeans he has kept in his wardrobe for more than 20 years, favouring a straight, relaxed cut over narrower styles. The family's overall colour palette was white and blue.

A stay shaped by current events

The family's Mallorca stay has been atypical, shaped by national and international developments. Felipe VI has been closely focused on the sovereignty threat in Ceuta, while his international agenda required the emergency trip to Colombia. The King arrived on the island on 23 July, and the family's first joint appearance this summer came on 4 August at the Marivent reception for Balearic society representatives.

During the stay, Leonor and Infanta Sofía participated in three public events, while Letizia took part in one. These included the closing of the Atlàntida Mallorca Film Fest by Letizia and a visit by the Queen and her daughters to the Esment Foundation in Palma, which works for the labour inclusion of people with intellectual disabilities. Leonor, Infanta Sofía and Letizia are expected to leave the island at the start of the week, while Felipe VI will remain a few more days with his mother.
