Russell grabs Austrian GP pole as Verstappen crashes and yellow flags cause confusion
George Russell claimed pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix after a late crash by Max Verstappen disrupted qualifying, with Charles Leclerc and Lewis Hamilton locking out a Ferrari second and third.
Qualifying drama
George Russell secured pole position for the Austrian Grand Prix with a lap of 1:06.113 in a Q3 session disrupted by a late crash for Red Bull’s Max Verstappen. The Dutch driver went off at the final corner in his last flying lap, bringing out yellow flags just as Russell was completing his attempt. The Mercedes driver lifted, and after a brief review the stewards confirmed the time was set legally. Charles Leclerc took second on the grid, just over two tenths behind, with Ferrari teammate Lewis Hamilton third. Championship leader Andrea Kimi Antonelli could not improve on his earlier effort and will start fourth in the other Mercedes. Verstappen, whose car was undamaged, held onto fifth ahead of the McLaren pair.
I'm quite happy with this result. The last few weekends have been pretty difficult, so I just wanted one without hiccups and a clean qualifying to start well tomorrow. Starting second is a good starting point.
- Antonelli fastest in Friday practice, Russell struggles six tenths behind.
- FP3: Mercedes 1-2, Russell edges Antonelli by 0.038s; Hamilton third.
- Qualifying begins. Alonso and Sainz knocked out in Q1.
- Q3 ends in drama: Verstappen crashes, Russell takes pole despite yellow flags, Leclerc second.
Ferrari’s engine step
Hamilton, victorious in Barcelona two weeks ago, praised the team’s push to close the gap. Ferrari brought small upgrade components to Spielberg, including a revised engine, and the seven-time champion said the improvement was evident.
Having both Ferraris in second and third is fantastic and reflects the incredible work done at the factory. They brought small components here, worked hard to improve our engine. I'm really proud of everyone.
Leclerc, who had struggled through practice (eighth in FP2 and seventh in FP3), turned in his best lap when it mattered.
Antonelli keeps control
Mercedes’ Antonelli arrived in Austria with a 41-point championship lead and topped both Friday sessions, including a best of 1:07.014 in FP2. In final practice on Saturday he was edged by just 0.038 seconds by Russell, but his consistent pace underlined Mercedes’ strength around the short, power-sensitive Red Bull Ring. The Italian will line up fourth with a clear view of the Ferraris ahead.
Positive and productive day, I felt comfortable in the car.
Spanish struggles and scorching heat
Fernando Alonso could only manage 21st in Q1 and will start near the back, while Carlos Sainz was eliminated in 17th. Both drivers complained of a lack of pace, setting up a difficult Sunday in conditions that are set to remain extreme: track temperatures touched 53 °C on Friday, with ambient readings above 35 °C.
